Title: Sara's New Hat
Post by: sgerrard on September 02, 2009, 08:39:35 pm
September 3rd is Sara's birthday, so I am going to start a topic about her new hat. It isn't finished yet, mind you, but I have started it. We know that Sara has enjoyed the anticipation for quite a while, so now I will drag it out a little longer by posting progress reports on her new knitted pink hat.

Here it is just getting under way:

Since it looks like a frisbee ring more than a hat, the key questions for now are: is it going to be too big or too small? And is it pink enough?

Happy Birthday, Sara. :)

Oh my gosh, I just checked in one last time before going to bed, and look at this! I'm tickled pink! and wow, I just used two exclamation points in a row. That seldom happens.

Now I am probably not going to be able to go to sleep tonight, because I am going to have to dream up a new pastime to take the place of dropping subtle pink-related hints on the ANA forum. Just before we start discussing the potato book, too.

The hat definitely looks pink enough. Do I need to measure my head, or are you one of those tailors who can estimate size merely by looking at your subject?

Phil is going to have his work cut out tomorrow trying to top this.

Thanks, Steve.

Saralynn,     A very Happy Birthday to you.      The 3rd is a nice day for one as I share the same no but the different month.
Never knew the pink hat shopping outing would end up so popular!      The whole crew would have been fun to have along in our Bloomingdales visit that day.         You will be set for all seasons now with the knit one.
Hope you get to celebrate today.                        Cheryl R

Update #1:

I had to restart this hat, the first attempt was destined to be the proverbial knit bucket - a bit too large. Plus I managed to knit what looked like a button hole into it.

However, the second attempt looks more like it, and it is starting to look more like a hat. I have included my own blue hat, and somebody's incomplete red hat, as color references in this photo.

Shouldn't be too long now...

Maybe the button hole was destined to be inspiration for a hat that has room for a BAHA?

Sara's hat is looking good.  But, now you've got me curious about who the recipient of the red hat will be.

It occurs to me that passed-along hats would have their own appeal, like the magic scarf does. Maybe we start a program where you send your hat to someone else, and get a new one yourself?

I am wondering if the recipient of the red hat can guess who they are. Someone who has been around a while, and asked for cranberry, and has been patiently (and quietly) waiting...

I am in the middle of setting up my new Mac mini. The new hat looks great - even better now that I can set the monitor to use the entire dimensions of the wide screen.

I'm guessing Jo for the maroon hat? Although what fun it is to wait quietly is a mystery to me.

Steve -

I like the pass the hat idea, but I'd really miss my green one!  Although I'd like a blue one, I'd still like to keep the green one too!

And what if I ended up with a color I didn't like  ???  pink for example (no offense, Saralynn).

I think it is very likely that Steve has bits and pieces of various colors left over from all of these projects. A patchwork hat may be just what the doctor ordered, so to speak.

There you go. Around here, those yarn scraps would be made into little yarn boy and girl dolls for the fourth grade Civil War Day. I'll hunt up a picture later. Meantime here are some other fun options:

A tie for Steve! http://www.knitpicks.com/Mens+Bias+Knit+Tie+Pattern_PD50604220.html
or maybe this goofy one? http://www.knitpicks.com/Bow+Tie+Pattern_PD50563220.html
A new magic scarf http://www.knitpicks.com/Teleidoscope+Scarf+Pattern_PD50582220.html
  and journal: http://www.knitpicks.com/Journal+Cover+with+Ribbon+Ties+Pattern_PD31001221.html
or perhaps for all of the wine lovers around here: http://www.knitpicks.com/patterns/Wine_Cozy__D31207223.html

My husband and I volunteer at Civil War Day every May. It is the culmination of the fourth grade Missouri History class. It's more or less a Civil War field day with all kinds of activities. I run a sutlery, a kind of general store that followed the camps. The kids are given the monthly allowance of $13 monthly pay for a Union private, then go shopping in the sutlery. It's great fun.

Here are the yarn dolls I mentioned:

I also make haversacks for carrying their gear:

A package arrived from Portland on Monday. When Steve first e-mailed me that my hat was ready, I offered to bake him a potato peel pie if he delivered it in person. Sadly, he had to decline my kind offer, so I decided the least I could do was bake a pie that he could enjoy from afar. I also decided that I would forgo the pleasure of seeing my hat until said pie had been baked, and today was my first opportunity. How's that for anticipation?

Thank you very much, Steve. It's a great hat!

Not even if you can schedule a delivery to Anne-Marie on Thanksgiving?

Thank you. Fortunately knit hats are very forgiving, particularly the brimless variety. It's really a great choice for mass production.

Good eye, Jackie! I received a whole set of pink cookware for Mother's Day. I like most colors, orange being an exception, but pink is my favorite. I have a pink cell phone, pink digital camera, pink iPod, pink keyboard, mouse and speakers for my computer, and now a nifty new pink knit hat. My kids love Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October because it brings a cornucopia of gift ideas for Mom - I got a pink toothbrush in my Christmas stocking one year. Plus my grandmother died of breast cancer, my mother was treated for early breast cancer two years ago, and one of my aunts is battling a more advanced case. So those gifts are of special significance to us beyond the color.

The potato peel pie was much better than I anticipated. I posted the recipe in the ANA Book Club thread if anyone is interested, complete with photos and commentary. I was also thinking that adding a little bit of leftover pork (from the pig roast that inspired the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society) and a few vegetables would turn the recipe into a great shepherd's pie.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. It's cold enough to wear my hat!
