Title: CK in SC
Post by: goinbatty on September 13, 2007, 07:52:12 pm
I went to a meeting at Roper Hospital in Charleston today.  Their CK center is scheduled to open in January.  I don't want to wait that long and don't particularly want to be one of the first treated there either.  Setting up consults in a few weeks in Jacksonville,FL and also looking at Asheville, NC.  Have any of you been treated at either of those facilities?

Hi Goinbatty,

Can't answer your question, but just a comment.  It would seem that if the team at your new CK center had previous training and experience then a new facility shouldn't be a problem.  We got a new CK center in Vancouver and my doctor does all his radiosurgeries there now. Even though the center is new, he is experienced with radiosurgery.  Just a thought.

The only other radiosurgery facility in SC is in Columbia, 2 hrs away.  Found out today that the consultation appt in FL are set up for 10/12.  This is a 4 hr drive from here.  Asheville, NC is about the same distance from here.  So I could go with either.  I may set up consults there also.  Waiting to hear back from their rep as to statistics, bios on physician/physicists involved.  Will let you know what I find out.

Hi Sue and Goinbatty,

After doing CK, I think Sue is right, if you get a good neursurgeon who has done ANs, and a radiation oncologist who has treated tumors, they will be able to do CK first time every time - in fact you might get extra attention if you were the first in a facility. I can see not wanting to wait till January, though.
And Sue, one of the team at Stanford, I can't remember which one, mentioned Modha when I said I was from Portland. I think he did some training there, they knew him and remembered him. I'm sure the CK at Vancouver with him would have been just as good as at Stanford. I'm mainly glad I went down there because of the old friends I was able to visit.
