Title: Cost of a tumor
Post by: amymeri on June 29, 2006, 05:02:31 pm
I got the final bills for my diagnosis, surgery and follow-up so far.

MRI $4500
Hospital stay and services $31,000
ENT surgeon $10,5000
Neurosurgeon $10,500
Misc nerve testing and spinal drain  $2000
Misc specialist consults  $2000
Medication copays  $400

I am sure I am forgetting somethings but basically this tumor cost me and my insurance between $55,000 and $65,000 this year.

Doesn't factor in lost wages...luckily my Short Term Disability was good.

Thank god for insurance.  My out of pocket is probably less than a thousand dollars.

Incredible.

My AN bill was almost $120,000.  (That does include my yearly follow-ups and 6 MRI'S during the past 8 years).  Yes! thank goodness for insurance ;D

my retro was 100K and I paid about 1100 out of pocket from start to finish.  It's amazing how fast it all adds up!
Thank goodness for insurance!

I never got the bills from my insurance company, but after two retrosigmoid surgeries and $30,000+ for radiation and an additional weeks stay for CSF leak, half a dozen MRIs, physical therapy and numerous medications I am now very curious how much I have cost them. (Aside from small copays for meds and doc visits, I have had no other out of pocket expenses. Phew!)

Mine was about the same as Amy's.  Like everyone said, thank goodness for insurance.  Although, if you are trying to get ANY kind of insurance now, it's not easy!  We are trying to get a policy to protect our home and they are giving me a very foggy picture.  Last time I tried (about a year ago) I was denied then they said I could get a policy if I was willing to pay, alot!  I should have gotten the policy years ago and now I'm sorry :/  Stuff happens, life goes on ;/

Yes, mine was well over $100,000. Between the shunt surgery - 2 week stay in hospital and tumor surgery one month later - 3 week stay in hospital.

I still have a few post-surgery radiation treatments to go, so the ultimate, total costs (to my insurance company) are still unknown at this point but the hospital bill was around $25,000. (4 days in ICU at $5,000. per, plus meds, 1 day in a semi-private room @ $3,000 per day, + meds and 'incidentials'.  My surgeon's bill was around $30,000. ($23,000 for the primary surgeon, $5,000. for his assistant and a few thousand more for the use of the operating room).  They earned it.  The anesthesiologist charged $4,500. but Blue Cross only paid him $3,000., which he accepted.  Add another $1,000 to the total for all the various pre-op tests and the total cost at this point would be approximately  $60,000.

I am no expert but I have to assume that Blue Cross 'discounts' almost all of the various charges submited in any one case and hospitals, physicians, labs and whomever agrees to accept Blue Cross insurance are all contract-bound to also accept their 'discounts'.  So, the insurance company (Blue Cross) has actually paid closer to half the charged amount (probably more like $30,000.) - and I personally owe about $1,200. in 'co-pays', which is manageable, and, considering my potential finanacial liability (no one 'discounts' the bill when you don't have medical insurance) had I not been insured for these expenses I would probably be paying medical bills until I died...or went bankrupt.

My total surgery and hospital cost was $98,000.00. My insurance is not the greatest and I had to pay $2500.00 out of pocket to reach my limit for the year! I guess it could have been worse. Ann
