Title: Steroid Titration
Post by: Catflower on May 05, 2007, 08:33:03 am
As I posted earlier in the week I had to resume another course of Decadron with a slower titration due to brain swelling (surgery, April 17)  I am experiencing horrible mood swings and as as mean as a "junkyard" dog.  It this typical during sterioid titration?

I'm having a pretty difficult go of it with the fatigue, right side deafness, ruptured eardrum in my left ear, facial paralysis, blurry vision on that side.  If I could just get some energy back maybe I would deal better with all the other stuff.

God Grant Me Patience (and I want it now)  :)

Steroids..... yep.
Not so bad when you are taking the full dose, but as you come off of them things are not as good.
The last time I came off of them I decided to work from home. and not go into the office.
If I had gone into the office guaranteed I would have lost my temper with somebody who probably deserved it. But I probably would have created an HR issue...

had to reply to this post because i hated those steroids. i was prescribed dexamethasone for about 1 half months and i gained 7 kg in that short period of time. my mood and temper were very bad BUT it all disappears once your body is used to go without it (:

I had a 2 week Dex taper following microsurgery in 2011 with no real side effects. After facial palsy following GK in Jan 2017 I had a 4 week course of Dex with taper over the latter 2 weeks and again had no real side effects other than some difficulty staying  asleep at night and the standard rise in glucose.

Maybe dosage matters, in Jan I  was Rx'd one 2 mg Dex tablet twice per day for 14 days, then one 2 mg tablet per day for 7 days, finally one 2 mg tablet per day alternate days for 8 days. Perhaps higher dosages have more extreme reactions?

I was prescribed prednisilone at a high dose without a taper.
Apparently the latest thinking is that if you only receive a short dose the taper is unnecessary.
But if you take steroids for longer than a week, the taper is required...
I had super powers, and became a super hero while I was on them.. but did turn into a lethargic, grumpy not so old man, for a few days afterwards.
