Title: nerve regeneration ?
Post by: satman on October 22, 2007, 09:08:47 am
hey everybody, I have a question ,Most of you know my story but to make
a long story [a real long story] short .I had the cranial nerve jump back in august
and lately I have been feeling some weird things going on in my cheek and I'm
not sure what it is. It feels like a rubber band or something snapping me.
It's hard to explain the exact feeling.
Has anybody ever felt this ,and if so what is it ?

I think this is good news.  I think it means the nerves are beginning to work.  I've had similar feelings, almost like getting an electrical shock, as my face has been healing.

Hey Super Duper Trooper “8 Satman, ;D

Sounds like you have “Facial synkinesis
Here is the definition
http://www.answers.com/topic/facial-synkinesis?cat=health

Read what the ANAC (Canadian AN group) says about the facial nerve

Go to this link
http://www.anac.ca/en/dischargeTreatment.shtml

Then Click on “Facial Nerve Information link

Here are a couple of similar threads on our own ANA forum
http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=5084.msg47996#msg47996

(I am thinking that these sensations are a “good thing. I think you and “Yardtick should have a celebration and serve up carrots sticks at AN forum party… here

Read this one (re Yardtick’s post)
http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=5152.0

I had this weird lip twitching and now I can purse my lips, blow kisses  ;) and even drink from a straw now (this was around 4 weeks post op) … unfortunately since then I have not had, facially, anything exciting happen and still have the full facial palsy here at 8+ weeks.

When I DO start to get the nose twitches and cheeky rubber band snapping -I plan to have a big ole celebration here on our ANA forum.

The key is to talk 8)  about this, don’t get depressed about it  … and try to maintain a sense of humor.  ;D Laughter can be amazing medicine.

Bring on the rabbit nose twitching… start prepping the carrot sticks…LOL

Signed the impatient patient  ::)

Hi Satman,

My nerve was not cut during surgery even though I had total paralysis on one side afterwards.  I started feeling the "shocks" right after surgery, but I didn't have any movement until three months after surgery.  My first movements were only measured in millimeters.  Now I'm 25 months post-surgery and have a decent smile.  I still get the twinges so I hope I will still gain more movement.  Sounds like you are on the right path.  I wish you good movement in the months to come.

Same thing here..about 8 weeks post op.  Every time I get a facial "tingleing" or little electial shocks I seem to get a little more movement back.  Immediately after surg. I had no movement but it improved quite rapidly with facial exercises, except for my mouth, which has improved but at a little slower pace.  I had dry eye for about the first 5 weeks, now pretty good, no tears and some numbness around the eye.  All in all, it seems like the shocking is good.  Yeah, I will take more little shocks.  For me it means more healing.  Hope it means the same for you.

I have not had the surgery. I do know that when I am having healing going on in my head that is how it feels. It makes you jump from your sit.
I have gone through some good ones the past 3 weeks.
I am 2 years 6 months in recovery. This last week I went to a dentist because for 2 weeks after a plane trip my left side of my jaw and teeth were really hurting.I had no sinuse problems, and the dentist said he couldn't find anything wrong. By the time I saw him the pain had subsided. Then a couple of nights ago , not only with the firing in my head , I all so got up in the middle of the night feeling like I was on a rocking ship. I couldn't stand. I had to grab onto the wall it felt so weird.
I am blaming it all to nerve healing.

I know this may sound strange, but I have these shock feelings in my deaf ear.  Anyone experience that?  I never know when it is going to do it.  It doesn't hurt, just scare's me.  I just had my MRI, and no sign of regrowth.  It does it several times a day.  Just thought I would ask the experts here.  Thanks, BB

BB.

I had the shock in the AN ear start up 3 weeks prior to my surgery.(My hearing was declining rapidly around that time)

Now at 9 weeks post op (today!) I still have this. I notice it every night when I try to settle down to sleep.

Maybe post this under "hearing" and see if there is a reponse from others. I would sure like to know what it is too...

My surgery report indicated that some tumor residual was left there to preserve balance ... gee I hope it is not re-growing.  I am due for my 3 month MRI.

Satman,

My story is very similar to Jean's.  I was not cut but the tumor compressed my nerves.  It does take a while but it does improve.  That is def a good sign.  Everytime Jean posts a picture she looks better and better she is a mjor inspiration for me not to mention everyone else in this forum, including yourself.

I still cant get over that you had an 8cm tumor.  When I saw my MRI's I was in total shock and mine was only 5.5.  I saw you now have the eyeweight.  That was a pretty easy procedure eh?  Not even in the same ballpark as what u had b4.  Anyways, I hope all is well and I look forward to watching us improve.
