Title: BAHA and MRI's
Post by: Sefra22 on December 10, 2008, 08:37:54 pm
I have just started my research into BAHA. It sounds like it would be very helpful for me as I work in a music store and it is getting more and more difficult to communicate with people at work.

I have not been able to find out if it is still possible to have follow up MRI's after BAHA.  I had GK, so I still have to have MRI's every 2 years for a while, then every 5 years I believe after that.  ???

Lisa -

It IS still possible to have an MRI with a BAHA implant.  However, it's important to tell the technician that you have an implant prior to getting into the MRI machine.

I had my BAHA surgery in March 2008 and had my first post op MRI in April without a problem.

I love my BAHA and highly recommend it to anyone who is SSD.

Lisa,

I will second Jan's comment about "no problem" having MRIs with a BAHA implant (the processor isn't worn during the procedure), as well as her recommendation to pursue getting a BAHA -- mine has been a huge help!

I set up my appointment for my one-year follow-up MRI yesterday and sat down with the scheduler for a little chat so that it would be perfectly clear that I need to have the fat suppression option (since I had translab surgery), that I have a titanium implant, that dye contrast is to be used, and that I'll need a CD version to send out west to my surgeons. All of this was on the prescription, but I figure it doesn't hurt to review things verbally as well!

I will also have a similar chat with the technician when I go in for the MRI next week.

Best wishes as your plans develop!

Thanks for the info!  I just got a call from my audiologist. They don't have BAHA at their practice, but they are going to send my records to another practice across town. The tech I spoke to said she has personally tested the BAHA, and highly recommmends it.
Hopefully I will "hear" something soon.................
Thanks again,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I had the BAHA demo in October and it is awesome!  I am scheduled for BAHA surgery January 5 and am very excited.  I never thought I would see the day thatI would be looking forward to an operation but I am looking forward to this one.  Hopefully in just four months, I'll have my proocessor!  YAY!!! ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, Wendy.  I can't wait for you to have the surgery, and the three months go by!    Then, it will be neat to hear how you like it.  I went last week and tried the BAHA on, and I could hear so good, with my good ear closed.  It was such a thrill.
Please keep us informed of your progress as you go along.
I'll be praying for you as you go thru your surgery.  I know you will do fine.  Take care.

Hi Lacey!
Thanks for your good wishes!  A few of us in the New York area are meeting up a few days after my BAHA surgery and Debbi is going to take pictrures which I know she will post!  With the holidays upon us I know the time between now and then will just fly by!!! ;D  Since you had the demo and seem to           d it as much as I did, I'll be happy to let you know what I think of the surgery.  Jan (Leapyeartwins)  and Lori67 tell me it's a piece of cake -- but then compared to AN surgery almost anything would be.

Wendy -

BAHA surgery is a piece of cake - at least IMO  ;D

You'll do very well and I'm certain you'll be as thrilled with your BAHA as I am with mine.

Sorry for the hijack Lisa!

I got my appointment to test the BAHA! I have to wait until the end of Jan. because the Dr. I am seeing is new to the practice, and I was told they are currently installing the BAHA testing equipment.

Not sure how you "install BAHA testing equipment"  ??? , but I'm glad you have an appointment to try the demo.

Let us know what you think,

I'm not sure, either, but I was told that the Dr. who I am going to consult with just recently joined the practice. He has experience with BAHA in another state, so maybe what they meant was that that he was still in the process of moving in. I think it's funny that he is moving to this area at the same time I am considering BAHA, because until now, there was no one else in the area who had any experience with it.

Sounds like you have good luck - and excellent timing  ;D
