Title: Official Parrothead Thread
Post by: Captain Deb on May 26, 2006, 10:59:32 am
OK Parrotheads!  We can talk about anything in the general discussion can't we? Well, I saw MY American Idol, Jimmy Buffett on the Today Show a little while ago and got all inspired, and when Cap'n Deb the Parrothead gets inspired, she likes to spread it around.

I have embraced the Jimmy Buffett philosophy for the past 30 years or so, ever since I met him in Aspen in 1975 just after A1A came out.  He was hanging out up there and used to sit in regularly with this band I used to hang out with.  I got tired of the snow and moved back to the Caribbean to become a full-time sailor and musician, which I did for the next 20 years or so.  I was skippering a 52 foot ketch which was docked in St. Thomas and this bee-oo-tee-ful Cheoy Lee motored into the slip next to mine. Well, whaddaya know--it was Jimmy Buffett's boat Euphoria II.  I asked him what happened to my favorit Aspen band and he told me they had broken up. I had a part-time gig with a pick-up band at the time (Means I played with them while not on charter) and he said he was doing an impromptu gig there. I happened to not have a charter that night and what a concert it was!

I ran into him again several more times over the years of being a Caribbean Boat Bum, mostly on St. Barts.

I love his sense of humor and philosophy which is all about enjoying life and not taking yourself so seriously. He's a committed environmental activist and his Parrothead Clubs contribute to many local charities and environmental groups. Their motto is "Party with a Purpose". Radio Margaritaville is awesome and I listen to it over my 'puter whil I work and post--which is probably why I'm so chipper a lot of the time--I'm doin' a little Island Dancin', Mon!

As a musician, well, he's no virtuoso, but as a songwriter and novelist and children's book witer, he's unbelievable.  He's the only author in NY Times history to ever have a book on both the non-fiction bestseller list (A Pirate Looks at Fifty) and the fiction bestseller list (I believe it was either Tales from Margaritaville or Where's Joe Merchant) at the same time.

Anyway, I think Jimmy would love a lot of the insanity that goes on with us when we are goofing around, and God knows, we all have a common purpose to get better ourselves and to help other folks dealing with Acoustic Neuroma!

Since there's no Parrothead chapter in Boone YET, I thought we could start a little virtual chapter here! I know Dale will be in as he already told me he loves Buffett. His music helped Phyl get through her last CK treatment with flying colors! And one of our members is already a Parrot--just look at Gennysmom's pic!

So...............................................

Phinns up everyone!

Sweetie, I think you need to write your own book. Sounds like you've had a fun life, this time around.  (well, except for the AN.)

I'll have a cadillac margarita, please.

Hey I think we found a new Motto for the good ship PBW and must add it to our wench flag "Party with a purpose".  Since our purpose is help all the ANer's of the world and all the joy we get from doing it ;D

You are absolutely correct about me DEB!!!  I'm in! ParrotHeads Rock!!! Buffet is my idol also and that's one of the reasons Carol and I live in our Land Yacht and cruise the muddy roads of this wonderful country.  We lived a good portion of our adult lives in other countries, Germany, Greece, Japan, etc., and now are having a ball seeing what's over the next hill in our native land.  I'm not sure what it says about me that two of my favorite Buffet songs are "Let's Get Drunk and Screw," and "Boston Blackie Mustache" (I not sure thats the name but its how I remember the song), and they certainly aren't my anthems but I sing loud and long going down the road when they are on the radio (we listen to Radio Margarittaville on Sirious Radio).  I also play in a band during the summer months in Montrose Colorado (a bunch of us old geezers get together and do old time country and occassionally some buffet and fifties rock), we aren't very good but we have a ball and the folks we play for are all in that checkout generation so they really don't hear that well anyway (probably shouldn't have said that on this forum huh????) :D

For those of you who haven't seen Deb's art work you need to check it out.  She definitely has had an amazing, full life, and her talents are apparently boundless.  Her fine art is spectacular, alive with vibrant colours.  I would buy her biography, I think it would be really interesting, especially if it was a tell all. ;) I agree that the motto for this site/and especially for the ship should be "Party with a Purpose."  You have my vote for what its worth.

Party on all!!

Well, if I could sew, I'd make a flag and send it to Capt. Deb.  How fun that would be.

So, Capt., when's the book signing?  You'd take the book tour and we'd all get to see you someplace along the line.

OK, I am not a Parrothead, although I have parrots.  I'm more of the Dave Matthews genre of political and environmental consciousness.  But, Sue, I do know how to sew, worked in a fabric store for 8 years while I was in college and starting my career, so I can help there.  I guess I'll have to take a seat on the peripheral side of this thread since I don't listen to Jimmy Buffet music, but I like all the other stuff you're talking about.  So can I play Dave Matthews once in a while??  :D

Dale, I love Deb's artwork too.  I wish I had the time and the mind to take my artwork back up again.  Working a career sucks all the creativity out of you, at least it does me.  I need to buy me a Captain Deb work.  I'm working on teaching Genny to paint....I have a painting by one of our local elephants, and if she can do it, I think Genny can.

I too am a Parrothead.  I mourn the loss of left ear hearing when Jimmy comes to town.  No more concerts for me.

Jimmy Buffett always seems to come to the Twin Cities in the winter which adds to the fun.  Flip-flops and loud shirts instead of parkas and boots are the norm.  Makes for a cold dash to the Arena and back to the car but so worth it!!!!

Radiomargaritaville broadcasts ALL of Jimmy's concerts live and does about 3 re-broadcasts of recent concerts a week.  His live performances are so different from his studio recordings. The Coral Reefer Band is absolutely awesome and can play anything, and Jimmy's interaction with the audience is hilarious.  He's got a bunch of live albums out--the most recent is Live at Fenway Park. A  good one is Live at Mansfield, too.

Wonder if we can register an online Parrothead Club and make our charity the Acoustic Neuroma Association? Hafta figure out a way to make money for it.  The usual fund-rasing method is they have parties every month and individuals and businesses raffle off stuff. Some of the more creative Parrot heads make goofy hats and decorations to raffle off. My friend Captain Cindette handpaints these great fishbowl Margarita glasses and donates them to the raffle.  They also sell Buffett T shirts, pins, hats and stuff at the parties.  They call them "Meetings" and have a big grill going for the cheeseburgers!

Phinns up!

Hey Parrotheads! I found an online Parrothead club officially snctioned by PHiP! click on http://vphc.com/main/ and check it out--I don't know itf they have "chapters" or not, but with an official membership you might actually get tickets (they sell out in hours) and we could raise money for ANA.

OOOOO-EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
Some of the posts on this forum lately have just given me the WILLIES!  It really makes me look at my own little post-op problems in a whole new light--I got off easy!  My heart just breaks when I read some of the stuff these folks and their family members have endured.
Even more of a reason to enjoy each day and pursue all things UPBEAT!
I don't think JB has ever written a morose or sad song his whole 35 year career.  Every tune has something positive, happy, humorous, and just plain wacky in it. (I just listened to "Fruitcakes.")  Every having a rough day, listen to some Buffett for a little while--bound ta give ya a lift!

Since you've been to a Buffett concert, I guess you know how to make the "sign."  I PHinned a total stranger in the grocery store the other day--he was about 35 with his little 4 yr old daughter and they both had Buffett T-shirts on so I figgered I was safe.  The kid PHinned me back!!! ;D ;D

Wishing we were all like Samantha on Bewitched and could just twitch our noses and we could all enjoy a lovely day and night in the Caribbean and have some of that good food you mentioned and enjoy the warm waters.  I go there in my daydreams.

THAT"S prcisly why I tune in to Official Parrothead Radio every day in my studio--that's the days I'm able to work!  They even have folks who are on St. Croix, Antigua, Barbados, etc. calling in and we get to hear those wonderful West Indian accents.  When I go down there I usually give the taxi drivers a real chuckle--I speak fluent West Indian, mon! Been going to the Caribbean since I was 14 and learned to drive on St. Croix, on the left no less!
Stay up, evry 'ting gon' be arite!

Wow,
Last time I saw Buffett was in 1979 at Tanglewood in the Berkshires.

  Paul

So you haven't been to a concert of his recently--they are totally insane--everyone shows up in crazy costumes--coconut bras and grass skirts on EVERYONE (including the blokes) weird hats (and I mean WEIRD)-he does relatively small venues like amphitheaters where the ganja smell is a little toned down cuz it's outside. I tried to get tickets for the Charlotte Show and they sold out in about an hour. I called 5 hr after the box office opened and they were already sold out.  Would have been a challenge anyway.  I saw him a lot in the 70's when I was cruising--he'd just show up with his guitar at the local beach bar and sit in with whatever scratchy band was playing. I played with him myself once on St Barts at Le Select.
He remembered me from Aspen as I designed the sets for a group benefit concert he played in (with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and lots of local talent) I'm the chick that painted the giant skiing turkey with the cowboy hat with the big red"No" circle/cross thingie over it surrounded by 9 tie-dyed king-size bed sheets! They walked in for the sound check and I was still painting it on a sheet laid out on the stage. The concert was to raise money to sue the Aspen Ski corp cuz they decided to eliminate the season pass for the locals--apparantly the celebrities were starting to complain about having to share the slopes with us skiin' waitresses, maids, waiters and bartenders, who were way better skiers and a little radical to boot!

Well, I just heard one of my favorite JB songs on RadioMargaritaville and it really cheered me up, so maybe it would cheer some o' you up too! Enjoy! (Don't read this if ya don't want to, please)

You know I was talking to my friend Desdemona the other day,
She runs the space station and bait shop down near Boomtown.
She told me that human beings were flawed individuals, that the cosmic
bakers took us out of the oven a little too early, and I believe it.

Take for example when you go to the movies these days.
They try to sell you this jumbo drink 8 extra ounces of watered down
Cherry Coke for an extra 25 cents, I don't want it, I don't want that much
organization in my life.
I don't want other people thinking for me.
I want my Junior Mints! Where did Junior Mints go in the movi?
I don't want a 12lb. Nestles Crunch for 25 dollars.
I want Junior Mints!
We need more fruitcakes in this world.
Less bakers!
We need people that care!
I'm mad as hell and I don't want to take it anymore!!

Chorus:
Fruitcakes in the kitchen
Fruitcakes on the street
Struttin' naked through the crosswalk
In the middle of the week

Halfbaked cookies in the oven
Half baked people on the bus
There's a little bit of fruitcake left in everyone of us.

Paradise--Lost and Found
Paradise--Take a look around

I was out in California
Where I hear they have it all
They got riots, fires and mud slides
They got sushi in the mall
Water bars, Brontosaurs
Chinese mondern lust
Shake and bake life with the quake
The secret's in the crust.

Chorus

Speaking of fruitcakes--How 'bout the government,
your tax dollars at work.

We lost our Martian rocket ship
The high paid spokeman said
Looks like that silly rocket ship
Has lost its cone-shaped head

We spend ninety jillion dollars
Trying to get a look at Mars
I hear universal laughter
Ringin out among the stars

Fruitcakes in the galaxy
Fruitcakes on the earth
Struttin' naked towards eternity
We've been that way since birth

Half baked cookies in the oven
Half baked people on the bus
There's a little bit of fruitcake left in everyone of us.

Religion, religion. OH there's a thin line between Saturday night and
Sunday morning.
Here we go now.
All right altar boys.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa
Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

Where's the church, who took the steeple
Religion's in the hands of some crazy ass people
Television preachers with bad hair and dimples
The God's honest truth is it's not that simple

It's the Buddhist in you, It's the Pagan in me
It's the Muslim in him, she's Catholic ain't she?
It's the born again look, it's the WASP and the Jew
Tell me what's goin on I ain't got a clue.

Here come the big ones--Realationships--We all got 'em, we all want 'em.
What do we do with 'em?

Here we go I'll tell ya
She said you've got to do your fair share
Now cough up half the rent
I treat my body like a temple
You treat yours like a tent.

But the right word at the right time
May get me a little hug
That's the difference between lighting
And a harmless lightning bug.

Chorus

The future--Captain's log--Star date 2000 and sometin'

We're seven years from the millenium
That's a science fiction fact
Stanley Kubrick and his buddy Hal
Now don't look that abstract

So I'll put on my Bob Marley tape
And practice what I preache
Get Jah lost in the reggae mon
As I walk along the beach

Stay in touch with my insanity
Really is the only way
It's a jungle out there kiddies
Have a very fruitful day

Chorus

That's right. You too. Those crumbs are spread all around this
universe. I've seen fruitcakes. I saw this guy in Santa Monica roller
skate naked thru the crosswalk. Down in New Orleans, in the French market
there are fruitcakes like you cannot believe. New York, forget it,
fruitcake city. Down island we got fruitcakes. Spread them crumbs
around. That's right. We want 'em around. Keep bakin' baby, keep
bakin'!

Oh don't you just! I spent many many nights at anchor in this harbor, the sunsets are absolutely amazing. There is a beautiful white sand beach ashore and it is dotted with palm trees and little beach bars. There used to be only one, Stanleys, and it had a great tire swing. Just thought I'd post the lyrics to "Manana"--above is the pic of the Canegarden Bay referenced in the song!

Jimmy Buffett--Manana

She said I can't go back to America soon
It's so g**da** cold it's gonna snow until June
Yeah, they're freezin' up in Buffalo stuck in their cars
And I'm lyin' here 'neath the sun and the stars.
Customs man tell her that she's gotta leave
She's got a plan hidden up her shrewd sleeve
Wants to find her a captain, a man of strong mind
And any direction he blows will be fine.

Chorus:
Please don't say manana if you don't mean it
I have heard those words for so very long
Don't try to describe the ocean if you've never seen it
Don't ever forget that you just may wind up being wrong.

Tried and I tried but I don't understand
Never seems to work out the way I had it planned
Hanging out at a marina when Steve Martin called
Singin' anybody there really want to get small.

But women and water are in short supply
There's not enough dope for us all to get high
I hear it gets better, that's what they say
As soon as we sail on to Cane Garden Bay.

Chorus:
Please don't say manana if you don't mean it
I have heard your lines foe so very long
Don't try to describe the scenery if you've never seen it
Don't ever forget that you just may wind up in my song.

Called all my friends on those cheap nightly rates
Sure was good to talk to the old United States
While the lights of St. Thomas lie twenty miles west
I see General Electric's still doing their best.

I've got to head this boat south pretty soon
New album's old and I'm fresh out of tunes
But I know that I'll get 'em, I know that they'll come
Through the people and places and Caldwood's Rum

Chorus:
So please don't say manana if you don't mean it
I have done your lines for so very long
Don't try to describe a Kiss concert if you've mever seen it
Don't ever forget that you just may wind up being gone
And I hope Anita Bryant never ever does one of my songs!

Enjoy!

Delaney Talks to Statues
By: Jimmy Buffett, Amy Lee, Mac McAnally
1994

Delaney talks to statues
As she dances 'round the pool
She chases cats through Roman ruins
And stomps on big toadstools
She speaks a language all her own
That I cannot discover
But she knows I love her so
When I tuck her 'neath the covers
Chorus:
Father, daughter
Down by the water
Shells sink, dreams float
Life's good on our boat
Delaney draws me pictures
She finger paints the sand
We chase the dogs and hop like frogs
Then I do my bad handstands
She's growin' up too fast for me
And askin' lots of questions
Some I know the answers to
And some I'm lookin' for suggestions
Chorus:
Father, daughter
Born by the water
Surf's up, sun's down
Life in a beach town
And some of the things I've seen
Maybe she won't have to see
But there's a lot I want to pass along
That was handed down to me
Delaney talks to statues
As she dances 'round the pool
She chases cats through Roman ruins
And stomps on big toadstools
She speaks a language all her own
Just a little like her mother
And she knows I love her so
When I tuck her 'neath the covers
Chorus:
Father, daughter
