Title: Capt Deb cancer update
Post by: Captain Deb on September 02, 2010, 12:18:19 pm
I originally broke the news that I have thyroid cancer in the Cognitive/Emotional issues section under "Can't I get a *** break."  Here's the update:  The type of cancer I have is called papillary thyroid cancer and has a very high survival rate if treated right.  I originally had outpatient surgery for a thyroid nodule 9 days ago and on Monday got a call from my ENT's office saying the mass they removed was malignant.  The first thing I did was have them fax me the pathology report.
Seems the little bugger was 1.5 x 1.2 x .7. (Maybe it is my AN's malignant evil twin!)  From what I have been researching, they do a pathology of the things while they have you under and go ahead and take out the whole thyroid at the same time, but for some reason this was not done in my case.
I don't know why they made the decision to not co-ordinate this with the pathologist, but I'm kind of glad because with this kind of majorish surgery I want to go off the mountain to a better hospital than the one in my small town.

I have made an appt with an ENT who works with Charlotte Presbyterian Cancer Center, which is considered a "center of excellence".  Lesson learned from having an AN.  My father had a highly curable stage 1 bladder cancer  treated locally and he died 2 years later because they were not agressive enough in his treatment.  That is NOT going to happen to me.

My appt is next week on the 9th.  Here is a link to papillary thyroid cancer:

http://www.endocrineweb.com/capap.html (http://www.endocrineweb.com/capap.html)

Thanks for all your well wishes.  I'm sure I will be around for a long long time to harass all of you and create much more high seas hijinx!

Deb .....

Thanks for the specifics on your diagnosis.  It sounds like you have an excellent medical facility close by.

Since I had radiation exposure to my sinuses as a teenager, I am at a much higher risk for thyroid cancer in later life.  My thyroid lab studies have always been in the normal range (except for a short period in my early twenties) and no doctor has ever felt any nodules.  I have become quite complacent about all of this ..... after learning of your experiences, I am going to be much more vigilant.

You will be fine, I know because there are many prayers going out on your behalf ..... including mine.

Best thoughts.

Clarice

Thanks, ye scurvy scoundrels and wicked wenches!

Check out these odds:

Less than one in 100,000 people get an acoustic neuroma.

Less than 5% of people who have AN surgery have headaches

Less than 1% of thyroid nodules are malignant.

I have all three!!!

I really need to go to Vegas and start gambling my a$$ off considering my history.

Capt Deb, you and I would just clean up in Vegas.  I'm in those one-in-a-million categories for AN and Breast Cancer.  I guess we are just intended to demonstrate how to constantly beat the odds!

I wish the very best for you and I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!!

You know Deb, I know you've been through it all, yet you keep on fighting. I wish you all the best in your on going journey. You certainly have run the gammut, or should I say walked the plank. There is little I can say or do to make it better for you, but know that I am thinking of you, wishing the best for you, and yes, praying for you too. I say this because I am a believer in the human spirit above all else. I believe we all impact each other no matter where we are. I hope my positive energy meets yours.

Hello Deb,

I'm here to help "cheer for you."

The woman who tunes my piano went through somewhat your very own story and lately.  She is doing very well, I'm pleased to report.

I've made true friends on this forum and some very nice people come out of the woodwork in difficult times.

Even "love has blossomed" off this forum although my lips are sealed yet, my AN tumor isn't.  My Acoustic Neuroma tumor is under control.

My next MRI is due by the end of October or early November.

You are experienced and get the best treatment available.  You were always good to me and I remember you well.  I think of you often.

All my best thoughts as usual,

Palace

Wow....I am way behind.  First, you are in my thoughts and prayers.  Second, I know that you have the right attitude to beat this.  Your decision to go off the mountain to have it taken care of is a good one.  As a twenty four year survivor of the Big C, I know that you will be around for at least another 30 plus years giving all kinds of advice and caricatures!
One thing that did me a lot of good as I was fighting IT was a session I took in anger therapy...MD Anderson offered it.  We yelled and screamed and threw things, but we also drew pictures of what we thought it looked like and how we could wipe it.  As  artist you are I would love to see your renditions of said evil twin !  Go get'tem and keep us posted...we love and care about you.

Love and hugs,
Brendalu

Deb,

You have, indeed had more than your share!  I have a friend who was just treated for papillary/follicular combination after having her entire thyroid removed.  Hers spread to the lymph nodes and the laryngeal nerve, but the doctors feel she will be fine as this is a very treatable cancer.  I also have another friend who went through this 12 years ago, and she is just fine.  You're in my prayers as you go through this and I trust you will be fine too.  You must be sick and tired of one thing after another.

Wow! You guys are great--especially nice to hear from the lovely Palace!  She calls herself that because she is a true princess! She even has a professionally made profile pic!

I have an appt on Thursday in Charlotte, NC with an ENT surgeon I found through Charlotte Presbyterian--I even spoke with a patient of hers--her receptionist went through the very same thing. Very big nice hospital where my grandscallywag, Thing 2, was born.

I spent Labor Day in the Emergency Room (no I was not in labor)--I had a bad reaction to the meloxicam (NSAID) medication that I take for my back pain.  Nausea and a monumental case of the pukies.  I had slacked off a bit on the tummy meds, apparently too much.  I'm feeling fine now, but am avoiding the anti-inflamatory, and of course that means even more pain.

I saw my GP today and she put me on Klonapin for anxiety and stress.  I've had a family situation that has really upset me recently but I won't go into that here--I may vent it out over in the Cognitive/Emotional section, which we ought to rename "The Vent Room" or "Psychiactric Help 5 cents" (anyone remember Lucy's booth from Peanuts?)

Bless all of you for being so supportive--I get more of that here than from my own family sometimes (except for Dr Love, or course!)

Hugs to you all xoxoxoxox

Capt Deb, I hope the klonapin helps you!     I have a friend who was finally found to have panic attacks and it has helped her so much to function well!                    That is too bad to have family stress as know all too well that does not help what else we deal with!              Good luck with the upcoming surgery and take it all day by day!                       Cheryl R

I purged an energy sucking vampire that I had tried to make nice with on facebook with one click of the delete button.  I told her what was going on with me and she posted for all to see, "Karma is a *****, ain't it?"  Does she really think I DESERVE losing my art career, a brain tumor, wonky balance, chronic migraines, excruciating daily back pain, AND cancer? Jeesh!

Hey Deb,
It's been a very long time since I lurked on the forum, I am shocked to come on here today and read about your AN's devilish tiwn in your Tyroid.  I'll be putting on the pirate socks righ away and sending positive energy your way for a speedy recovery from all this nonsense.  My mom had this and others I know or, seems being able to whip it's $$ is pretty positive.  I was reading your list of the odds,  I keep saying that kind of stuff with the darn AN coming back for a second round. I  didn't know we were in such a low odd rate with the headaches.  Just though we all suffered with the brainwrecks.
Anyway, I'll pop in more often to see how you are doing.  hang in there,.

Wow Donnalynn, I PMed you back before I read this--you hit the nail on the head.  I'm surrounding myself with love and light. I don't have a surgical date yet, but I'm pretty sure it will be next week.  I'm going to Charlotte because that's where the folks who truly love me, my daughter-in-law and family,  can care for me post-op and Eric can have some help.  I'll have some rowdy grandscallywags around, but they like to get in bed and snuggle, too.  How healing is THAT!

I have had people tell me that my health issues that have all occurred since my divorce from first husband  are because
I left ... leaving was an act of self preservation and ridding myself of one vampire ... but have many that say I have caused
him to sin since he is living with his girl friend of 8 or 9 years and that my girls are b******s because I was allowed only one
husband ... no mention about abuse I suffered at his hands ... that is fine since the man is head of the house ...

and these people have said my AN and Lupus are a direct result of the negative energy that I have focused on myself ... they had
to be cut from my life ... glad you cut your vampire out of your life ... surrounding yourself with positive people is the way to go ...
the others don't matter

continued good thoughts coming at you ...

PS Jim--I went through a class 5 hurricane in 89on St Croix.  A lot of my very good friends just up and left the island and I never knew what happened to them or where they went since there were no phones for 6 months and many folks houses were just leveled or boats had just disappeared when I tried to go see them.  Everyone seemed to be camping out at a neighbor or friends house until they could get a flight off the island--which took me almost a week of showing up at the airport every day and waiting around with no food, water or bathrooms till you could find a plane that could take you.

Facebook has allowed me to reconnect with lifelong friends from this diaspora.

OK, ye wenches and swashbucklin' scallywags, here be the updated on Capt Deb's battle wiv the dreaded "C" Monster:

The new ENT surgeon is Charlotte was GREAT!  Very tiny fingers like my wench dentist.  She was a little appalled at me not having a needle biopsy done so I wouldn't have to go through 2 surgeries, like I'm having to do.  She also looked at the 3 1/2 in scar on my neck and said it was caught in the muscle and that was why it was crooked and quite noticable.  She said she would not only take my thyroid out with a 1 1/2 incision, but she would go in and fix the scar that the other surgeon had made.

The lesson in this is that I will NEVER be treated for anything other than a small boo boo in my local hospital again.  Third strike, you're out!!!  Punctured lung, torn sacroiliac joint capsule from 4 hr hysterectomy, and now this!!!!

I won't have a surgery date till next week, but it looks like sometime in mid Oct.  Meanwhile I will stay on the happy pills (Klonipin) and try to amuse myself.

Thank you so much for all your well wishes and concern--it means so much to me, especially from those folks I got to meet up with at the last symposium.  I hope some of you that I have gotten to know online can make the next one or else, when I am feeling better, I will have to hunt you down and hug you to death.

Love and Kisses,

Capt Deb

It's good to have a plan in place with a doctor you trust. Nice that she is willing to fix the scar left behind by a less conscientious colleague. I did not know Klonopin was a happy drug. It just made me stupid.

Well, I said I would try to amuse myself didn't I?  I ordered some CRAZY shoe paint and attacked two pairs of my favorite old clogs.  My scuffed burgundy Naots are now a loverly shade of bright purple with a stripe of darker metallic purple across the edge that goes across the foot.  The icky puke green Keens are now a wild "Emerald City" dimensional metallic that I may have to rethink, (I have lots of paint) Now I need a new "victim" to paint a bright turquoise--maybe my black Clarks.
I'm just getting started and have glue for crystals,  flowers, trim, etc. No more boring black and brown shoes for this wench!! Just the thing to take my mind off all this crap I'm dealing with!!

I'm sure you'll be fine, but really, you do have better things to do with your time.  Enough hospitals already!

Now where's that nickel I had.

You know, they let me wear my socks into surgery.  Maybe you should jazz up a pair of socks, too, so you can dazzle them all the way into the operating room!

Great idea, Priscilla!  We can all wear our pirate sox like we used to when someone was having surgery or treatments, when Capt Deb has her surgery...that should send some good vibes!

Donnalynn,
I found some glow in the dark skull headed socks at Walmart.............back ground is black and the area hoot!  I may add some bling to "jazz" them up a bit!  The background is black on mine, but they have them in a lot of colors.

The painted shoe site is here:

http://www.sassyfeet.com/ (http://www.sassyfeet.com/)

But you can get the paint cheaper here:

http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/1847-AA.shtml?lnav=paints.html (http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/1847-AA.shtml?lnav=paints.html)

Official pirate sox were started by the PBW crew when someone bought a boatload of 3 pack assorted jolly roger sox in pink, black and white and mailed them out to a bunch of us.  The skulls had little pink bows on them.

I painted my third pair of shoes today--a pair of rather boring black ballet flats with a leather flower are at this point a bright raspberry although the flower is still black.  It might end up deep metallic purple with a few Swarovsky crystals on it.

I have a pair of boring Clarks clogs which may end up with lil pink skulls on 'em!!

In case you dint know, I made a living for years hand-painting t-shirts, clothing, bags, hats, visors, pillows, etc in between captain-for-hire gigs.

I cruise the accessories dept at Walmart on a regular basis--that's where I found all the pink skull and crossbones bandanas that I mailed out to people when I first started recruiting crew for the PBW.  I'll have to check them out!!

Capt Deb, I can not see the skull and cross bones now without thinkiing of you!     Seems there are alot of them out there, some on kids toys and clothes but other places too.         Occ think if should pass it on if in a place that is one that others would see it!
The footware artistry sounds very neat!       Not all of us are super creative!    I enjoy seeing those that are!             Cheryl R

I think my brain has shut off ... was reading about painted shoes and pirates and vampires and think what the heck does that have to do with anything and had to go back and read several pages to remind myself of things ...too tired and not fully functional

as for vampires ... sarcasm gets rid of them for me when garlic breath doesn't ... ain't got time for vampires feeding on me so don't allow it

Pirates ... I am suppose to make a tatti bogles (scare crow of sorts ) to go on the square and had read a mesage sent me and couldn't figure out how people here knew about pirates here as the Tattie Bogles have a pirate theme this year ... winner gets $5 out of every $20 entry fee and there were about 100 last year ... money goes to local charitable causes ... I am entering one to take a chance at winning some money for my Girl Scout Troop's bronze award ... the girls are helping design our Tattie Bogle

then shoes ... painted at that ... brain humming off key trying to figure it out ...glad there were notes to re-read and figure out what my brain scrambled ...

OK...back to present ... the painted shoes sound so cool ... my 11 year old would love to paint shoes ... she has painted everything else from pants , shirts and hats ... shoes would be right up her ally ...

Our walmart has alot of pirate stuff ...and I saw some in Claire's when I stopped in the mall last week to get something to eat ...even Dollar tree has pirate things ...

Keep up the painting of shoes and your spirit in this new fight ... and thank goodness for good doctors with little hands ...

if this makes no sense just toss it come morning ... I am almost typing while unconscious

I have a surgical date--Thursday, October 7th at 10:30 at Charlotte Presbyterian Hospital.  They gave me the option to boot me out later that day, but I have insisted they keep me overnight.  I am the Complications Queen!  Both of my major surgeries I was rushed back in the day after I was released.

Working right now on a pair of ugly beige Merrill sport shoes that are becoming sparkly turquoise, pink, lime green and purple.  WAY less boring and quite a conversation piece.  Took a before picture and will post it with an after picture soon.

My vampire I deleted off facebook wrote me a huge apology letter and "wants to put the past behind us."  I'll have to think about that one.  Maybe the prayers I have been saying for her are working?

Soundy, you are so funny--Cancer, Vampires, Pirates and Sparkly Shoes are hard to put together.  Only us wonkyheads, right???

I was kind of reading in my sleep when I was here and totally got confused and had to re-read several pages until I caught up and caught on ...some days I wonder how I make it to the end and not get lost ...

hope surgery goes well for you and I would insist on over night too ... both day surgeries I had (carpel tunnel and hysterectomy ) I ended up back at hospital with issues ... they are in such a hurry to get people in and out that care issues sometimes is not taken care of before release

I only have one pair of gray New Balance walking shoes (boring) and one pair of black Nike sandals suitable for walking  in water ... you make me want to go out and buy shoes so I can decorate them ...

been working on tattie bogle design ....last year they were old ladies ... didn't participate ... this year as pirates I figure it will be easy ... I think I will make mine female and name her Captain Deb ... a good luck charm for you ... they are suppose to keep away the baddies .... we have prayer rocks ... a tattie bogle seems to be perfectly logical to me

My thyroid surgery is Thursday, Oct 7th--will probably head to Charlotte Wednesday AM so I can get in for pre-ops--still don't know if I have to do that as the surgical dept won't return my phone calls about meeting the day before with the anesthesiologist.  Jeesh this is getting stressful!!   These people haven't grasped the concept that it is a 3 1/2 hour trip to the hospital and riding in the car triggers my sacroiliitis up to about a pain level 10.  Taking the dog with us so I can't lay flat in the back seat, but I may put Sadie up front and do that anyway!

Just really frustrated--back doc dropped the ball on setting me up with the pain clinic and when I called to find out when my appt was after a week of not hearing from them, they had never heard of me so I got put at the end of the line--not till end of Oct.

I need a drink!

Well, I see the Capt stole the BB from Dr Love!  Here to give the update as well.

Deb's thryoid offiicially has a new home in the Path Dept.  Dr. Love called me earlier to let me know that they took it along with some accompanying lymph nodes.  Still unsure about potential of radio treatments but I know the Capt will keep us posted.

Then, got a 2nd call around 6pm EST.... Dr Love letting me know she was somewhat awake.... so, when she posted here from her BB, I'm actually impressed that she didn't throw in colorful language and blame it on the meds! ;)  He handed her the phone and I told her to "nod" if she comprehended anything I said.  She nodded... I saw it, I really did! :)  So, told her EVERYONE was in pirate mode, in pirate gear and cheering her on, sending smoochies and healing hugglez. She "nodded" that she comprehended what I shared... and I heard a very faint voice say good bye to me... :) :) :)

Told her/Dr Love I'll phone tomorrow to check on her. Rumor has it they are looking to kick her out of sick bay Friday am.

Deb.... if you are checking here again, high as a kite...... ready?  GO REST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  SMOOCHIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't normally scan through many topics but yours caught my eye - so glad your surgery is over and I'm sure you will do well.  I am scheduled for a needle biopsy of my thyroid next week.  Am concerned that 33 days of radiation for breast cancer in 2004 may have contributed to the need to do this.  Don't think my 9 year W&W for 9th cranial nerve schwannoma is involved at all.  Doc is not concerned at all - in fact gave me a choice to wait until next thyroid ultrasound in a year but didn't want yet another thing on my mind.
Continue to improve,
Sheryl

Home from the hospital--BRUTAL migraine last night. Eclipsed any incision and back pain I was having--they just shot me up with 50mg demerol and Ativan every other hour or so.  Headache backed off mid-morning, so other pain started making itself known. Had to try to sleep sitting up due to throat drainage--so the moped turned out to be a slightly smaller Mack Truck!

Home at grandscallywags in charlotte and then back to Boone tomorrow.  Got my doggie and Dr Love with me as well as grandscallies so life is GOOD!

Thanks for all your well wishes, my AN family--we are so lucky to have each other!!!

Much Love,

Feeling better--a little more lucid, but I look like a friggin' bullfrog!!  Neck all purple and swollen from new incision and the one that the doc had to fix from the last doc.  Good thing it's scarf season! Grandscallywags thought it was really gross--they love gross stuff. But Hey, it don't hold a candle to a middle-fossa-half-mohawk-staple-questionmark, right, folks?

Glad to hear you are a bit more lucid, Capn. Yes, much better than the mid fossa questionmark, no doubt.
Healing thoughts your way,
Maureen

Feeling better--a little more lucid, but I look like a friggin' bullfrog!!

Captain Bullfrog  ;D

I thought you would like these critter pirate photos- the bullfrog in particular  ;)

Know we love you and we want you well.

Hmmmmm Halloween is around the corner.  ;) You could be frogs in pirate socks. Have the grandscallywags also dress as frogs... and let them wheel you around as they hop at your side.

Here is my favorite bullfrog scene clip from the movie Meet the Robinson's

You know? They do make Bullfrog Pirate T shirts

Cap'n Deb,
So glad the turrible surgery part is over.  Praying for a good path report.  Hang in there, take it easy, and don't drink too much grog. ;D

Glad to hear you are through your surgery and out of the hospital.  Sounds lke you are being well cared for and soak up every minute of that time, attention, and love coming your way!!

Wear your scars with pride, Deb. You are here to tell the tale, scars and multiple colors to boot....life is about stories, and lots of 'em.  Halloween is coming you know - might still have some colors and swelling to really make it great for the kids!  (and that holiday marks my 50th b-day, so I'm planning on celebrating in a mighty way - even with the yuck still coming out of my head from 4 previous surgeries...but who's counting?!).

I hope your pain is manageable and your healing is swift...and adventure-free!!

Hugs to you,

Kathy

Kathy, I forgot you were the Ickyhead Queen!

Great news folks! Pathologist report found NO CANCER in the rest of my thyroid or the 17 lymph nodes they removed (I didn't even know people HAD that many lymph nodes.)  I probably could have kept my thyroid and closely monitored it, but given my family history of bad luck with cancer, my doc and I decided to go the aggressive route.  I lost my Dad in 3 years to stage 1 bladder cancer that had a fairly high cure rate.  Not taking any chances, so Yaaaaaaayyyy!
Still suffering from lots of fatigue and headaches as my Botox is wearing off--get another round Tuesday.

Thanks for all your support--got a kick out of all the bullfrog silliness.

Hugs,

Capt (ribbick!)Deb(http://www.ipswichpartyhire.com.au/images/products/frogU05930.jpg)

Deb .....

That is good news, indeed!  Kicked that big C right in the teeth ..... way to go.  Now concentrate on healing from this insult to your body, get rid of those awful headaches, and you will be good to go!  I want to see more of your fabulous artwork!

Prayers continue.  Clarice

I'm doing pretty well actually!  All this resting has lessened my back pain and I had another round of Botox, my 4th, last week.  I think he really shot up the right places this time. BTW my forehead is smooth as a baby's butt!  Went for a 1 mile walk on Sunday and it didn't seem to fire my back up nearly as much.  Less stress is probably lessening my pain, plus just post-Botox, my anxiety level over "never knowing when the other shoe is going to drop on my head from a mile up and give me a raging brainwreck" is lessened as well. Still considering radiofrequency nerve ablation for both head/neck and sacroiliac.

My Gallery called and really misses their best selling artist--they seem to be doing well despite the recession--apparently the wealthy Floridians who have enormous summer McMansions up here still have all their money, and every artist I know has lowered their prices, so the "haves" are taking advantage of the situation and buying art.   I got nuthin to sell!  I warped my loom today, but my woven stuff can't hold a candle to what I make off my paintings.  Pain meds seem to suck my creative juices dry.

Couldn't get by at all without you people!!  Bless all of you....

Give yourself a chance to recuperate and then  I am sure the creative juices will will start up again!  You sound like you are on your way to a great recovery and we are so pleased for you :).

Deb ~

I was pleased to learn how well your recovery is going.  I trust your recuperation will continue at this pace and in time, perhaps when you least expect it, your artistic instincts will re-emerge, pleasing gallery owners, affluent-but-thrifty art lovers and your natural urge to express yourself through your art.  Making a few extra bucks would be nice, too, I suppose.  ;)
