Post by: Joef on November 15, 2009, 09:02:49 am

We are aware that tonybootho is posting spam every hour or so. It isn't really necessary now to report every one of them.  :P

We are working on a better way to control this stuff, including a security patch coming in the next week.

Meanwhile, I'll have "spam, egg, sausage, and spam - that's not got much spam in it."

You must be on top of it because I have never even seen a spam message here and I check in at least a couple of times a day.

Thanks for your vigilance.

Kind of off topic here, Phyl (you know me, I love to hijack), but what is the ANA doing about forumites that are still having trouble logging onto the Forum since the switch to the new format?  I don't know how many people this has affected, but I do know that Brenda (teff) still cannot log on.

Is this a wide-spread problem?  or isolated to a few users?

Just wondering,

Jan

Has anyone else gotten this same spam in their email?  I got a ton the other day.  I got it before I logged on to ANA and then saw the same stuff here.
Jan, I had the Brenda's problem for a week, I finally deleted my AN forum bookmark and re-established the using a different search engine.  It worked for me.

Yeah... we saw! ;) xoxoxoxo

Jan, I am not aware of widespread user log on issues.  Have Brenda/teff try a new log on profile or have her email (from her internet email) to admin@anausa.org to have it resolved.

Brenda, were these emails to your internet email address vs. PM's here? I/we are aware of unsolicitied spam emails showing up in folks Internet (ie: gmail, yahoo, etc) email inboxes in the past week.   Suggestion is to make sure your email address here is "hidden".  You can go to your profile settings and "hide" your email address so if spam profiles show up here, they cannot capture your email address.

As you all know, we do not allow posting of personal info on the forums for your safety and I would recommend you hide your email addresses in your profile so others cannot capture it.  We are looking out for you all and these are recommendations to help secure your personal info on the site.

Thanks, Phyl - and Brendalu.

Will email Brenda (Teff) and see if she's still having problems.

Phyl,

I got the emails both ways, but I also got it taken care of and it goes to trash or spam now instead of my in box.  Y'all do a great job of taking care of the spam here.

Phyl, I checked the box to hide my e-mail address from the public, but it still shows up. What else do I need to do?

Sara,
Unless you resolved it recently, perhaps you can see it.  I can't.
Hope that helps.

Right under my avatar I see four icons: one for profile, one for website, one for e-mail and one for personal message.

On yours I only see profile and PM.

On this page I can see e-mail addresses for Jan and Brendalu and myself, but nobody else.

Mine shows up too when I look at my own profile.    Does it look different if someone else looks at my profile?

Hi Sara

Users here have an option to "hide" their personal email addresses or not.  Suggestion is to hide it to help prevent spammers from accessing personal info.  If you click on my profile/name, you will see my email is "hidden".

Cheryl, when you view your own profile, you will see it. If your email address on your own profile is in Italics, then the email is "hidden".

Everyone can do the change (if you choose to "hide" your email address) by going to your profile, then down the left, choose "account info", then where you see your email address... just below it, chose to "hide" the address... and don't forget to "save changes" at the bottom of the page.

Thanks, Phyl. Just to be crystal clear, even though I see an envelope icon under my own avatar, nobody else can see it? And if I see an envelope icon for someone else, it is because they have not hidden their e-mail address?

It would be a lot less confusing if my own little envelope did not show up at all.

correct. I can see the envelope icon for me, yet, my email is "hidden" and when I look at your post here... no envelope.

hope that helps!

Personally I don't see any legitimate reason to hide my email address.  I have filters that filter out junk mail - plus email addresses are easy to get off of one of those public records sites anyway.  If someone really wants to find mine - or others - with a little searching in the right places, they'll find it.

I have 2 (more if you count work) email addresses.  I use my yahoo (free, junk, etc) email to sign up for forums and such.  I don't use my verizon email address for anything on the web :).
