Title: Fingers crossed I "MAY" get my surgery date moved up.
Post by: stoneaxe on June 03, 2009, 10:17:53 pm
June 17th may be the day. I go the call today that it might be possible. That will give me 9 more days of recovery for the paddle.

Bob -

that would be great.  I know you're looking forward to the paddle.

If they aren't able to move it up, I still think you'll be farther along in your recovery than the doctors' anticipate.  A good attitude and being in good physical condition going into AN surgery are both assets.  I think either way you'll be back to paddling before you know it  :)

I am picturing Bob lying on his back and strapped to his paddle board, doing a backstroke the whole way. One way or another, he will be there.  ;D

That is great news. I also think attitude has alot to do with recovering and healing. Can't afford to have negative people around me , as I have to keep my own spirits up and not have someone else bring them down.

Great news!  I hope this works out for you as it sure will give you a bit more recovery time and also diminish the usual pre-op anxiety we all go through while waiting for our surgery date to arrive.

Whew!  Glad it was moved up and not back!  The whole idea is traumatic enough without the date for surgery being moved around.  I know from all reports that you will do just fine and be back to paddleboarding, thinking "Why was I so concerned about this?"  Best wishes.  Be thinking about you.

Great news, Bob!  Your list will get done and if not, the only thing that is really, really important, is to be at the hospital on the 17th...with Chapstick in hand :)

Hi Bob,

Nice to see it moved up for you.    Just to give you a sense of timing, I was with McKenna on April 13, and it is now coming up on 8 weeks.    I would say that I am now feeling pretty darn good enough to consider getting on the bike for a distance ride.     I think that the 6-8 week range is reasonable for strenuous activity, but of course everyone's mileage will vary.       All and all, you will be happy to have a successful and complete removal of the tumor forever!      That will be the best feeling!       Good luck!

Thanks for the cheering section everyone....it feels kind of funny to be so happy about the idea that someone is going to cut a hole in your head... ;D

Steve....that's great news. Sounds like things are going real well. I've been busy training so i'll be as ready as I can be...all depends on how I heal. I'm optomistic.

Bob,

I know I'm late on this one and forgive for the tardiness, but I didn't want you to think I didn't see the update. You KNOW I'm cheering you on and sending those wellness wishes your way for the surgery.  I'm sorry that it has come down to the surgery, but I know you are in FAB hands and I know you are in great shape for this and it's time to rawk!

Will look for the updates and know I'm thinking of you.

That's so great Bob - whoop whoop!  Fantastic news - I'm sure you'll be right for the paddle.  The first couple of weeks you might think holy cow, I'm never going to get there, but once that first little while is up I'm sure you'll get back on track super fast!  I went paddling today out in some rough weather today but it was great, I just felt really strong and that paddling against the wind and waves was really helping me.  You'll get there too - hopefully the weather will be better for you!

cheers

Hey, JB!  ;)

Bob,
Excuse my absence checking on your post-op progress.  I'll have five college boys visiting and a session party at my house that week.  But I'll catch up as soon as the dust settles.
Good luck!

Good going, Bob! I'm glad you got your date. I think the 17th gives you just enough time to get things done without a lot of extra time to "worry"  ;)

I'm waiting for my surg date ... your positive attitude is very catchy ... (thanks!)

That's great, Bob (as much as looking forward to surgery can be great!). That is over a week of extra training time - I think that will be very helpful.
I'm so glad to hear because I was just wondering today when your surgery was going to be.

Bob,
Remember to bake something for the surgeons.  Just take it into the pre-op room with you and on the gurney down to the OR, and they will give them to the desk where the team take their breaks.  Label them specifically for Barker/McKenna surgical team.  It works.  (See Adrienne.)
Good luck!

Thanks all...getting a little anxious. Definitely on for the 17th....all systems go. Training is going well. I get out about every other day dor a couple hours. I'm going to do a 15 mile paddle this weekend and hope I can get at least some waves...not much surf though unfortunately. I was hoping for a good surf session before I go in since it will probably be at least 2 months before I attempt to surf again....going to drive me nuts. Maybe I'll have some good drug induced surfing dreams... ;D

HHmmm...baking....tollhouse cookies? Any suggestions....do you know what they like? What ingredients increase fine motor skills... ::)

Bob ......

Although I do not know you personally, I have great admiration for you and your paddleboarding skills.  When I was much younger I might have tried it ..... now I am too afraid I might make matters worse by breaking something if I tried it!  ::)  With your determination and good physical condition I know you will be back at it as soon as you can stand up straight!!

Will be thinking about you as you countdown to finally getting rid of this unwanted cute thing deep inside your head!  ..... well, maybe cute isn't the right word ..... you can fill in another adjective!

Bob,

I've been reading about your situation. Sorry that your tumor has grown and that you have to go through the surgery, but you'll likely come out better on the other side having it removed. I admire your dedication to the paddleboarding and expect you'll be able to start it up again soon after your successful surgery. I know from experience that being physically fit and having a positive attitude is very important and I believe has a lot to do with having a great outcome and good/quick recovery.

Good luck and hope to hear more about your paddling later this summer.

Hey Bob,
Wondering if you got your 15 mile paddling in today. I thought of you - I did a very slow 15 mile run (that kicked my bottom)! It was so hot and humid; I thought, "If I were paddlle boarding right now, I could just fall in the water and cool off!" Sounds much better ! (unless the water's too cold, that is).

Thanks all, I can't wait to have this behind me.

Keri...the 15 miles was put aside in favor of 4.5 hours of some of the best surfing I've seen in awhile. I was hoping for some good surf before surgery for the last two weeks but its been poor to mediocre at best. The forecast for yesterday was more of the same with small waves and onshore winds predicted. I decided to go down to the Cape anyway since a long paddle along the coast means seeing seals and whales which adds to the enjoyment.

I was very enjoyably surprised when i called my friend Shawn while on the way down and he said to get my butt down there...the surf was firing, shoulder to head high waves and glassy perfection. I surfed Nauset beach until I couldn't paddle anymore....absolute blissful exhaustion. To top it off because the forecast was off there were no crowds. I lost count of how many waves I surfed. And to really put the icing on the cake...for about an hour i was out all alone, just me and the seals, and for some reason the seals are way more curious than ever before. I had one pair following me for awhile. I thought for sure the male was going to grab my leash. I also had a pod of about 30 pilot whales swim by just outside the break...a couple of them coming within 50' of me. A great day to think back on over the next couple of months.

Days like yesterday are what my mantra is all about... ;D

Thanks again,
Bob

What a great time! I'd be a little bit freaked out at first with all those things in the water with me, but it does sound amazing and fun. I'm so glad you got to have such a great time / experience before you're surgery. That's hard to beat!

The seals are always there but the last couple of times out they have been more curious than normal. The whales I see occasionally..although I saw that same pod of pilots just the day before (one of them had a very distinct chunk missing from his dorsal). Must be a lot of food in the water. I also saw a seal catch a fish right next to my board in about 3' of crystal clear water. I saw him coming from about 30' away and moving fast then I noticed the fish just before he caught it about 4' from the side of my board...good sized fish too...I think it was a bluefish or maybe a schoolie striper. The seal made a sharp 90 degree turn just leaving scales in his wake.

As if all that wasn't enough...I'm not sure anyone has done this before. I just posted this as a question on a standup forum I belong to. The first time it happened was by mistake. It's a sand bar break about 100 yards off a steep beach. After catching one of the bigger waves, head high or so, I was paddling back out and all of a sudden I was on a wave....going in the wrong direction! I was on the rebound of the wave I had surfed in. It caught me by surprise so when it met with the wave coming in I was launched...5' in the air. After that I started looking for it on the bigger waves that I rode in close to the beach. I managed to catch 3 more and was flying over the reform and whitewater. I could actually ride it over 2 or 3 incoming waves depending on how big they were. What a blast!.

I thought I told you to be careful out there, Bob.  You're gonna make us all crazy with worry!  ;)
Had a bear here yesterday and saw a bull moose and snapping turtle on the side of the road Friday.  Twin eagle chicks are getting ready to fledge.  I'll PM the bear photo so this doesn't become a wildlife thread.
Getting close, kiddo.  When's pre-op again?  Or did you do it last week?

Nothing really to worry about...lots of fun and a fall is just a big splash....well maybe a couple of bruises here and there too... ;)

Your worried about me and you're taking pictures of bears.....you know...you only have to be able to run faster than the person your with.... ::)

I'm more worried about the people driving cars while I'm going to and from the beach than I am of sharks.

Wow, sounds like Sue and Jacqui could have quite a business making gift baskets - and from what I've heard there's a fairly big market in it.

Make sure you tell them to get some rest - surgery, and all the waiting it brings, can be stressful on family members.

Molly,
If Bob is still on the neuro floor (12th if I remember correctly) on Monday morning, you can just walk in and find him with no security, and there's a good chance he'll be awake and having his vitals recorded at 6 am, so do it!  That would be so cool to get a high five from Stoneaxe before you go in for your procedure.
I would bet, however, that he'll be out on the third day as so many of us were.
Get psyched for life on the other side of surgery.  It's great over here!
Nancy
