Title: GREAT news in middle school basketball
Post by: saralynn143 on January 23, 2010, 09:30:22 pm
Some of you will remember meeting my middle daughter Elbee in Chicago. She's the one who was in a wheelchair following foot surgery. With surgery and physical therapy behind her, she is deep into her eighth grade varsity basketball season. This weekend was their home tournament, and they won, beating three of the top teams in the state! With the win and a second place tournament finish earlier this season, they qualify for the national tournament in March.

Way to go TLS Lady Tigers!

Yes, I am a proud mama.

Sara ~

No need to ever justify being a proud Mom.  Your daughter came back from a debilitating situation and not only healed but has blossomed into a valuable player on her championship varsity basketball team.  That's a notable achievement for a girl in eighth grade - and definitely something to be proud of.  Congratulations, Elbee! :)

If memory serves, the Lady Tigers were at that tournament last year, too. And Sara was proud of them then, too.  ;)

Congratulations to Elbee and the Lady Tigers, we look forward to more news in March.

I'm so glad she had a good recovery from her foot surgery and am so happy for Elbee and her team! And you, the proud mom, of course!

Thanks for sharing!

Good memory, Steve. The team did go last year, when Elbee was on the JV squad but also the travel team. This year she is a varsity player and back with her former coaches, who appreciate her defensive skills. She will have a LOT more court time this year.

Onward and upward and on to the fundraising. Hoo haw.

The Lady Tigers are ranked second among the 12 teams invited to the state tournament this weekend. This earns them a bye Friday night and they will see their first action Saturday morning at 9:15. Last year they won consolation, nearly defeating the team that went on to win the tournament. They are playing better this year than last, so I hope they do really well this weekend.

I hope the Canada-USA gold medal hockey match is over by then, so some fans can turn out for the game.  ;D

Go Tigers!

The girls lost the championship game by four points to a team that they beat in our home tournament and in the first round at last year's state tournament. This year it was their turn. The Lady Tigers played a tough game and stayed in it until the very end without giving up. And second in a state tournament is pretty darn good, I must say.

Some of you may remember that my brother-in-law passed away in an automobile accident just before the national tournament last year. He was an avid basketball fan, and attended several of Elbee's games. He had a phenomenal capacity for remembering who, on either team, scored how may points or had so many fouls or did this well or that poorly. He gave me a very nice card to thank me for taking care of my mother-in-law after my father-in-law passed away (just a few months before Tony did), including a gift card to a restaurant. I redeemed it today to take Elbee out for a celebration dinner. Tony would have been proud to treat her to dinner on this occasion.

So here's to the Lady Tigers, and here's to Uncle Tony, one of Elbee's biggest fans.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend. I sure did, even though I have a bad case of bleacher butt!

That result sounds similar to the result the USA hockey team had today. There is no shame in making it to the finals and losing a close game at the buzzer (or in overtime, in the case of the USA hockey team). Congratulations Elbee and the Lady Tigers for a good showing.

Uncle Tony sounds like he was a good man, and it sounds like he had a fitting tribute from you today.

Last night the girls received their invitation to play at the national tournament. We will be traveling to Valparaiso, Indiana on March 25 and play begins March 26. Just like last year, there will be live feeds of all tournament action. I'll post the link later on.
