Hey everyone,
I have my Gamma Knife treatment this Friday and am getting my stuff together for the trip. I'm working on a mix CD that my acoustic neuroma and I can sing along to on the drive out to Pittsburgh (my AN can really hit that high note. Not much range though). Does anyone out there have a song that really got them pumped up, positive, centered, etc for their treatment? So far I have Tom Petty "I Won't Back Down", Jimmy Cliff "Many Rivers To Cross", and Destiny's Child "Survivor" (its a break up song but I like to imagine that Beyonce is singing about my tumor).
I like all kinds of music, so if you have a song that was important in your AN journey, please share!

You haven't been around here for very long so you probably missed the poem I wrote last year.
With apologies to Edgar Allan Poe.
Once upon an MRI table
So noisy I thought it was the Tower of Babel.
I mused and pondered my neuroma of yore.
As I lay there weak and nauseous
From the contrast in my veins,
Suddenly a voice from nowhere
Asked what music I would like to hear.
Golden oldies did I tell her,
Told the voice from out of here.
Only those and nothing more.
Ah, distinctly I remember,
It was in the bleak December,
That I lost my right side hearing
And heard weird tones from in my brain.
Along with tones I had bad balance,
Like as drunk but without drink.
What is this, I wondered,
That has been inflicted,
Inflicted upon me evermore.
A timely visit to the doctor led me to the ENT.
Led me to the ENT who sent me
To the noisy MRI.
MRI that found neuroma, shock that put me an a coma.
Filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before.
Tis some error, did I mutter.
Only this and nothing more
Alas, alack, it was no error.
Neuroma present, albeit small.
ENT said watch and wait,
I resigned me to my fate.
Six months later, on the table.
Golden oldies in my ear,
Long I lay there, wondering, fearing,
Dreaming dreams no mortal
Ever dreamed before.
Shortly after, went to records,
Filled out form and got CD.
Brought it home to view the image
And this mystery explore.
Let my heart be still a moment,
And this mystery explore.
Sure enough, neuroma grew some,
Thing of evil from horrors shore.
Then methought of how to kill it,
Cut it out or zap it dead.
As of now I still am thinking,
Thinking how to kill neuroma,
So it bugs me nevermore.
Speaking of Poe, he might have been describing the feelings of Tinnitus sufferers in another one of his poems: The Bells.
Oh, the bells, bells, bells!
What a tale their terror tells
Of Despair!
How they clang, and clash, and roar!
What a horror they outpour
On the bosom of the palpitating air!
Yet the ear it fully knows,
By the twanging,
And the clanging,

You have some impressive poetry skills my man, but this is a downer! You capture the trauma of the AN diagnosis well...too well! I hereby challenge you to use your creative powers towards a more positive sequel. Maybe parodying something about making it through treatment, learning to live with AN symptoms, and/or triumphing to once again live life to the fullest? Unless that's not what happens!?

Great suggestions. These are not only going on my pre-treatment mix, but my post-treatment/recovery soundtrack as well. I almost wish Bruce Jenner had an AN after all so Kanye might have written some awesome rap about it (probably not).
Another song I thought of is Young the Giant's "My Body". Kind of in the same vein as your suggestions. Thanks!

You need a "during treatment" CD, too!! When you check in, they will ask you if you have a CD or music you would like played during your treatment. You can bring your "strength music" in with you, and your nurse at UPMC will play it for you while you are zapping your AN.
Note: each time I hear a song played that was spinning during my treatment, I am transported back into the Perfexion machine! Maybe something to consider because the song may end up having particular associations.....

Had my CK during the Easter holiday weekend. I had Christmas music, Frank Sinatra, Elton John, U2 and.... Yanni for my mix of music. Certainly kept the CK team on their toes! :)
