Title: A BAHA moment!!
Post by: wendysig on May 02, 2009, 10:52:15 am
Hi all!

I briefly mentioned using the phone on my deaf side in another post, but wanted to to share the experience the way it happened -- it was amazing!  I was on the phone with my sister recently and we tend to stay on for long periods of time when we talk.  Naturally, I  keep the receiver to my left ear since I am deaf in my right ear.  For some reason and without realizing I was doing  it, I switched the receiver to my right ear -- I think you can imagine my amazement and delight when my BAHA picked up the sound!  It was completely unexpected.  I have since found that if I don't hold the phone completely over my right ear, which is what I must done that day, I can hold the receiver on the right side of my head and talk on the phone.  This is something I haven't been able to do in almost a year -- I am very excited and happy about this discovery and wanted to share it!  It was a truly wonderfuol BAHA moment.

I love my BAHA!

Wendy -

sometimes I think you and I should just have this quote tattooed to our foreheads  ;D

Very interesting about the phone and your BAHA.  Believe it or not, I've never tried this.  In fact, just recently Mike (mikjul1) asked me if this was possible, and I said no.  My theory was that the phone would interfere with the processor and make it whistle.

Okay, Mike, I guessed I lied to you  ::)  :-[

Thanks for sharing this BAHA moment with us, Wendy!  Awesome!

Just kidding I had a close call to day I was doing an air conditioning job for a friend up in an attic and the air handlier hit my side where the abutment was like 2 inches above it what a close call man that scared me.  :o and boy did it hurt that is the area that is sore  :'( .

Sounds like bad BAHA moment  :(

Perhaps you should wear a hard hat!

I've been wondering how many other BAHA users use their "bad" ear on the phone, like Wendy does.

Anyone??

That's wonderful news, Wendy.
I ,too am deaf in my right ear, and I am left handed. When I get my processor, I will no longer have to struglge to write while I talk on the phone ;D

Mike -

Sorry  to  hear about your accident and Ihope you're feeling better.  Protective gear ofsome kind might not be a bad idea.

Jan,

Before I accidentally put the phone to my bad ear, I'd tried holiding the receiver to the abutment, as the instructions trhat come wiith the processor say you can.  I found it squealed and whistled, just as you thought it would.  If you hold the phone to your ear loosely  and  not cover the whole thing. but don't touch the processor, it will pick up sound.  I've done this quite a few times purposely to perfect my technique.  If you're on the phone with someone who speaks in a low voice, it doesn't work though.  Just the same, it's an amazing exerience.

Maybe that's where I went wrong - I didn't read the instructions  ::)

And that's usually a male characteristic  :D  (No offense to the men)

I think it's pretty cool that you figured out this "trick", Wendy.

I'll have to try it myself.

Joef ...... I like that idea for the hair-cutter  :D !  :o !  ;D!

Any humorous stuff helps prepare for baha!  Yesterday, I was wearing the Divino tester (a real ugly thing) during choir practice before service.  Of course I got comments and questions.  Best retort was .... I'm now with the CIA and I'm checking things out cause Pres Obama is gonna worship here today    8)

..... OK OK ya had to be there ......  ::)

Greg,

I'm sure it was a very funny bit saying you were checking the place out for the Obamas.  I also think your idea about the hair stylist might be funny, but to tell you the truth, the first haircut I had after my BAHA surgery didn't even make the guy who cuts my hair bat an eyelash although he was pretty taken aback when he say the scar from my AN surgery (who wouldn't be though).  He said he's seen the BAHA abutment  before and would have known what it was if I hadn't already told him.  I guess they do see all kinds of thiings in that kind of job.

Jan .. oh sure I work for the CIA, owned by Chuck, Inez and Alfie .... we make widgits .... it's a real fine company!

Mike, the D-tester does work well, except in noisy situations.  Think It'll help more in less-noisy places where I still would need ... or desire ... to hear those on my right.  Based on what you all say here, I'm looking forward to the real thing helping me hear the tenor in choir, carpoolers when I drive, roller coaster screamer, and specially my wife (DUH!)  ::)   ;D

Wendy, re hair cutting, I gotta watch it if hair's a bit long.  In summer, clippers might be used for a shorter cut.  Think I should tell them so there are no mishaps ..... damaged abutment  :o  or damaged clippers.   :-X  I would guess less possibility of a problem with styling womens' hair.

Keep  ;D-ing !
Greg
