Hi Joe,
I take it you are driving to Charleston Sunday, before your surgery Monday morning? I got it a little tangled up at first, because I am 3 hours behind you here in Oregon, so it is still Saturday here as I write this. ???
If that means tomorrow morning is our last chance to wish you well, there may be some who will miss out. I will take the liberty of wishing you the very best on behalf of everyone who doesn't get a chance to.
I know you have already lost some hearing and facial nerve function, and may not get it back. I hope you do, but mainly I hope you come through the surgery well and have a good recovery in the weeks after. If you can get a message through to us by someone at home, that would be great, but that takes second place to recovering from the surgery. We can wait if we have to. Either way, we will be looking forward to your return to the forum soon.
All the best,
Steve

Hope everything went well today Joe.

Helllo from postie-land...everythiing went perfect during surgery. They actuallly didn't have to do a graft nerve, because he was able to"clean" the nerve well without grafting a new one. So now I should have the best chance at a full recovery (or better). They did give me a cataract abrasion on myGOODeye. II see what ya'll were talking about being weak, because I'm extremely weak this morning. I just left out ICUinto my regular room. So i'm going to rest for a little while and hopefully talkk with you later.

Actually this is his wife posting because he can't see that great lol.....He also wanted to let everyone know that he should regiain all of his hearing in his left ear, and he has actually got up to walk around our room twice today so far. His balance is ok and not so much a big issue for now 24 hours post-op...sorry if this isn't spelled right because I'm on thie tv web in the room and can't reaally see what I'm typing. He said thanks for all the information because he's kinda knew what to expect before it happened.. He's gonna rest for awhile tonight ,ad try to get on here again tomorrow and hopefullly he can see and read. oh and his drain should becoming out tomorrow.
P.S.he wanted to know if anyone had to wear what i call "wrestling headgear" because that is what's driving him crazy around your incision site and ear.
-
Yes, I had the headgear, but not for long. I went from that to just matted hair! My husband did take a purple Easter bunny I'd been given and wrap his ears together to resemble my "lopsided turban." I still have him, too, or them, rather, the bunny & my husband! :D

Great news! It sounds like the surgery went really well. I am amazed you are up and about so soon.
Take care of that eye. No nerve graft and hearing may come back is icing on the cake. Take it easy, Joe!

It seems that every doctor/hospital is different in regards to when they get you moving. The idea behind getting up sooner than later is to keep the blood moving and prevent clots. They had me up the morning after my surgery.
Mrs Joe, thank you very much for keeping us all updated. Sometimes its like we are in the waiting room, pacing back and forth, waiting for the news from the doctor! :). Your updates help put our minds at ease.

Fabulous news... Joe is officially rocking the recovery!!
-
Oh, is that the spinal tap? Around here, we have them in all our trees, draining off the pressurized fluid, but it ends up on pancakes and waffles. Sorry, having breakfast. I know, Ernie, don't eat while you're on the forum, but I have to multi-task. So much to do in the next seven days!
Joe, You made it to the other side! I'm so jealous. I won't even talk about having hearing because that's just too fabulous to imagine. I did order one of those ipod things for SSD yesterday. Pre-op tomorrow. Whoop, whoop!
Mrs Joe, Thank you for spreading the word. It really helps those of us about to walk through those doors.
Everybody, Anissa is rolling into the OR about now.

Continued good wishes.

this is joe's wife again...i have a question? Joe is on the recliner and as most of you know he had his surgery on monday, and today he has had more swelling than the previous days. He has run a low grade temp also 100.5- 100.8. He actually had talked to his surgeon today and he said as long as it don't get above 101.5 not to worry about it....just wondering if anybody else had any insight into this....His incision site is clean no reddness or anything so if anyone else had this please let us know so we won't worry too much or maybe need to worry more....Thanks in advance
Mrs. Joe

If the surgeon said he is okay, he is okay. :)
Hi Mrs. Joe,
I think it is quite common to have a little rebound effect as all the heavy medications wear off. I assume he has instructions on if and when to take pain relievers. Just be sure he gets enough fluid, a mild fever can dehydrate you. Gatorade, or something. Hope he feels better soon!
Steve
-
Was he given a prescription for steroids? I had the same thing, minus the fever. I had swelling inside that eventually caused enough pain so that even my pain killers weren't completely effective. I called the number they gave me for 24/7 access on a weekend and one of my surgeons called back and told me to start taking my decadron. Within 6 hours, I felt like a million bucks again :).
Ernie
-
I also ran a low fever right after surgery and was told that it was pretty common when you're taking steroids. I was surprised, since I've taken steroids many times before (asthma) and never ran a fever, but sure enough, as the dosage of steroids tapered off, my fever went away!
But, keep tabs on it and don't hesitate to mention it to your surgeon....my surgeon's clinical nurse was always a phone call away and I talked at least 2 times a week to her so after a few weeks, I didn't even have to say who I was! She continues to be a great means of support and is very patient with this patient's questions, no matter how trivial they may be. I hope you have that connection, too....it sounds like most folks around here have that available to them.
As always....good luck!!

Hi everyone, this is my 1st post post op, yea this is joe, I have had my wife posting for me up until now, I feel a lot better today, the pressure in my head is not as bad today, I still cant hear anything yet but the surgion said it would return in time. I walked about a 1/4mile today using a walker, I feel 100% better today. I still get pretty tired after activity but I know that is to be expected, I want to thank everyone personally for speaking with my wife in my absence, I believe it really helped both of us to have you all here. My left eye goes blurry from time to time, but other than that my vision is fine, I should start getting some use back from my facial nerve in a few weeks. Dr lambert said that this was as perfect as a surgery could be, better outcomes than we even thought. so I am happy. I am going to rest for a while, just wanted to drop a line and chat for a few minutes, I will post agian later, thanks for everything Joe :-\ still crooked but maybe not for long ;D
-
Glad you're feeling better.
You'll be way ahead of me pretty soon. :D
Nancy

Hi Joe!
Congratulations on your first self update! Sounds like everything went really well and you are on your way to recovery. I'm sure the facial weakness is a bit scary but we are all praying that it is temporary. It seems a lot of people get varying degrees of weakness right after surgery, but usually make a full recovery.
We will continue to pray for a quick recovery. Keep those updates coming!
Ernie

Welcome back, postie! While we all liked your wife, we're very glad to "see" you again ;D
It's very encouraging to hear you "feel 100% better today". I found post op - especially after I got out of the hospital - that I felt a little better each and every day.
As I'm sure you know, recovery takes time and patience, but you are definitely on the right path.
Keep the faith,
Jan

So glad you are feeling better and on the path to your "new normal"! We are all behind you, so please keep us posted regarding how you are doing!

Joe:
It seems as if you're having a fairly normal recovery and will be fine in a few more weeks. Rest as you need to and don't be overly concerned about posting right now, but thanks for the effort and the positive update. :)

So glad you are feeling and doing better. Still do get rest though!
