Title: Good Shoes?

My husband is having his acoustic neuroma removed as I write this - we're entering our 7th hour of surgery. I was wondering if anyone could recommend an athletic shoe that has been good for balance. Any brand particularly good? Or just any good-quality athletic shoe?

Can't really answer the question but wanted to say best of luck with his surgery and hoping for quick recovery! I am sure someone will answer your question soon,, maybe a man! Jane

Footwear choice is highly subjective.  That being stipulated, I wear Reebok 'Crosstown' DMX athletic shoes for walking.  Extremely supportive and very comfortable.  About $65. retail.

I wear Asics Kayono's...if you look on the Asics website, they have their shoes rated as how well they help pronation.  I do the Kayono's because they offer the most amount of support for pronation (wide toe bed) so should offer the most stable base...

Cupcakequeen,

Right after my surgery in 2004, I noted that the soles of my feet were more sensitive and consequenlty had a greater role to play in maintaining my balance particularly with a severed balance nerve.

Whereas, prior to my operation I was content with wearing zip up boots....While receiving therapy in Kessler Rehabilitation Center in 2005 in New Jersey a therapist there suggested I buy a pair of Merrills a kind of sneaker that doesn't require lacing to keep my feet more on the ground and that actually made me feel the ground more than traditional leather bound zip up boots. In fact as I am writing this, I am wearing a pair!

I also wear The Merrill barefoot shoe.  It helps me really feel the ground to build up my proprioception.

In the interval since I wrote that I had a consult with my radiation oncologist in preparation for GK.

We discussed my balance issues.

He looked at my cheap Target shoes with the wide soles and said they were a good choice.
