I'm waiting for one of the nurses, or people who have recently had surgery, to answer.  My last surgery was in 1977 and I ended up having to have an enerma administered.   I figured that in the intervening years something else less...........invasive........... may have been invented.   Have you asked your medical team?

Did the doc put you on Colace ?  I can't remember if I took it 2 or 3 times a day & for how long,  but it helped (along with the water, fruits & veggies you're already doing) - & remember,  NO STRAINING !
Always good thoughts,  Nancy

Yep, twice a day colace.
I know ... no straining, but there is a certain element of "push" involved in even the readiest of poop events.

I'm not desperate yet, just hoped you guys had found a magical solution.   :)

Sadly constipation is the worse side effect to these pain meds.  :( The inactivity, with resting, also exacerbates this.

Well, 2 years ago when constipated after surgery, I drank, ate fiber and took collace... the plumbing was still clogged. Then I started retaining so much water I had hydrocephalus. Even with the diamox, that has a diarrhea side affect… the plumbing was not moving  :o

So sadly we had to do the “magic bullet” … known as dulcolax…

(Overuse of these can cause electrolyte imbalance so be cautious)

Here is a link for you to read up on.

http://www.drugs.com/cdi/dulcolax-suppositories.html

You might want to check with your physician before taking this over the counter medication…

Aren’t you glad to be part of a family that can talk publicly about “poops” (tease)

You will get through this- eventually

Try two Senna-C (or S) Plus, generic is fine, once or twice per day, and if that fails after a day or two, it's good old MOM (Milk of Mag) for me.

As soon as I got home from the hospital I took my magnesium pills.
Vital Nutrients Triple Mag 250 mg (has magnesium glycinate, Magnesium citrate and Magnesium oxide)
Worked like a charm, and over night! Wish I woudl have taken them to the hospital with me and I woudl have started them right away. I didn't take the stupid colace - all that ever did was upset my stomach and never worked that good, I thought.

I didn't have a problem with this issue after my surgery, but when my dad had gall bladder surgery, he used milk of mag-whatever(magnesium?) and he said it worked quickly(in more ways than one). Good luck!

Me too. The recent forum update seems to have omitted search. I have let the authorities know about it. :)

database error here as well... the "powers that be" are now aware of the issue.....

Ah, a commond "bonding" for those treated for AN's... esp if steroids are in use.  Many here remember the story of the "snake and the mouse" for me, courtesy of Captn Deb...... when I was having the same issue.  My doc, who is from Hong Kong, noted to me use of 8 oz of prune juice with a tsp. of honey, heated in the microwave for 45 secs.  Next day, excellent results.. and I continued its use while I remained on steroids... worked like a charm :D

Hope it works for you as well.

I also had been taking Colase three times a day for  for three days prior to the actual event with no success.  A glass of warm prune juice and Phillips Milk of Magnesia finally did the trick for me.  I rmember Cheri saying Ducolax did the trick for her, so two ideas in one post.  Good luck!

Jeep -

Dr. Battista prescribed colace for me post op also and it did the trick - but I didn't take Vicodin; which may be the problem.

If you're still having "issues"  :-[  I'd call his office and ask for his recommendation.  You can also email him through the Chicago Ear website, but phone will get you a faster response.

Good luck,

Jan

Thanks, Jan. I'm actually ok now. Dr. B did give me colace, which I've been taking and I stopped my vicodin two days ago. Maybe down to one tylenol a day - there's actually no major pain at all. Every so often some 20-30 sec pain jab will set in at various spots on the right side, but subside quickly. I'm also taking an antibiotic cause one of the IV sites was showing signs of infection, but other than that, no meds.

I've had long time recurring back probs, so really my lower back is bugging me more than my head. The exercises to relieve involve lowering my head, so I just have to make do.

My balances exercises are going well and I was finally able to do a one-legged foot stand for more than 2,3,4,5-then 10-20 seconds!! Then back to wobbly, but overall, I'm pleased.

MONDAY afternoon I will feel the warm soapy shampoo on my mangy locks ... I don't think I will ever look forward to something so simple as much again!!   :)

On Monday, should we ask which of the experiences was the most gratifying?  Nah.  Forget I mentioned it.

Anyhow, congratulations Postie!

Joyce, it sounds like you're pretty good at the exercises.  I remember falling over repeatedly on the one-leg routine regularly both pre and post op.  My kids were generally in hysterics - which wasn't amusing to me at the time  :( but it's laughable to me now  :D

The shampoo will be like heaven - I still remember those 9 long days like it was yesterday.  I actually apologized to Dr. Battista for the grossness of my hair when he removed my stitches, but I'm confident he's very used to that  :P

One thing I wish I knew for that first shampoo is to use baby shampoo.  I still remember getting shampoo in my eyes which caused them to sting.  My first instinct was to rapidly close my eyes, but then balance became as issue; almost fell on my *ss  :o

If you don't have baby shampoo - Johnson's seems to work best - use a shower bench if you have one available.

That first shower and shampoo is just the best.  It felt so good to crawl back into bed w/clean everything-jammies, underwear, skin, hair, etc.  The little things in life totally rule!  My back gave me problems, too.   I had to ask for a heating pad, and that really helped.  I'm now going to a chiropractor who does massage therapy to take care of some lingering neck and shoulder issues.

You are right on schedule w/all the usual complaints, and I'm sure your recovery will continue to progress well!  Good luck w/everything.

don't know if the poop issue has been resolved by now, but my autistic daughter has lots of GI problems and every doc we've been to recommends Miralax (it used to be prescription but is OTC now). She also takes Senna syrup.

I hope the hair washing feels great!

take care,
