Title: Just for fun
Post by: OMG16 on June 10, 2008, 12:17:59 am
I thought it would be fun to find out how everyone came up with their screen names.  I'll go first to break the ice.  OMG16 was the only thing I remember saying when I found out my son had a massive stroke.  "OMG he is only 16"  I'm thinking I need to change it to reflect where I am now however I'm not sure what to change it to.  Do all of you have any ideas?  ??? 16

Well 16, that's an interesting story. Sad, but interesting.  I, however, am not very clever, so my screen name is my name!  I figure I can remember that!   With so many screen names and passwords for so many different sites, I forget what I've used.  I had to write them all down.

Sue I hear you on the to many passwords screen names ect.  I bought a book for all of the different ones.  Since I am at home alot with my wonderful Baby Pumpkin I shop on line alot and they all require your memory to be in working order.  Don't change your email or you need to come up with new passwords and I am not creative at all.  I use the same ones for everything.  Anywho you can order the book from current magazine for like $10 and it has saved me more than once with my online banking acct.  The bank insists on making you change your password every 4 months.  ARRRGGGG.

Hi 16,

I chose my screen name because I am a big "I Love Lucy" fan. Desilu is the name of their production company Desi for Desi and Lu for Lucy. Thanks for asking! Ann  p.s. and as Paul Harvey would say " And now you know the rest of the story".

Post by: Kaybo on June 10, 2008, 06:27:46 am
Obviously my name is Kay but in college someone started calling me Kaybo - partically b/c it just had a good ring to it and mainly b/c I wore BIG BOWS in my hair all the time.  If you look at the pictures on the blog - the girlies are carrying on the tradition (not Addi anymore unless we are at Disneyland so I can find her! The style now is a ribbon in a ponytail so she has been doing that-I am so happy!).  One time when Addi was VERY small she asked why she had to wear bows and I guess I made an off the cuff remark that everyone "might think she was a boy" if she didn't.  Well, it stuck and I never corrected her and now the other ones think that.  I let them if it will keep them in bows longer!  However, I don't think that they will be mistaken for boys anytime soon w/ their long, curly, blond hair!!  I still love it when I answer the phone & somebody yells, "KAYBO!"  :D  Not very original..oh well!

I wish I had went ahead and used what my name is for some email use and that is mossmama. I have had a great love of the artist P Buckley Moss.    Some of you may know who she is.    I have been to every Iowa convention there has been since 1993.                There was one 2 weeks before my surgery and it was near Iowa City so I did my pre op workup the day before.     I am from SE Iowa originally so went and stayed at my sisiters.         The convention was the next 2 days.           It really helped keep me going with surgery coming up.
Kaybo,   my middle name is Kay and my littlest granddaughter is Kayla so it is a good name.

16,
My screen name is obvious enough to need no explaination.  But since we're talking about screen names on the site, I wanted to mention my favorite, that I wish I had thought of.  It was WHAT?   What? posted only few times, but they obviously had a sense of humor and understood about having an AN.

My screen name basically came about from a lack of imagination - remember folks, I'm an accountant  ;D

I have twins that were born in Leap Year.  I created this user ID a long time ago because every time I had to create a user ID in other places all the combinations of my first & last name seemed to be taken.  Finally I just gave up and went with this since it's somewhat unique and I find that it's not already taken by someone else.   Leapyrtwins is also my user name in other places - like eBay.

Come to think of it, I should have made myself LeapDayTwins because my kids were actually born on 2/29.  Oops!  Too late now  ::)

I have to admit that when I first saw it and then when Dave was reading to me. I thought that it was "lepor" like leprosy!!!
LOL!!

Funny, K  :D

I've noticed some refer to me as "leapy" but "lepor" is a new one LOL

I really like the name "What?" - sums things up quite nicely  ;)  I wish I would have thought of it.

My screen name is the same name I employed during my broadcasting career.  It's my not my 'legal' name (the one I sign on checks, for instance) but it is my 'professional' name.  Easy to remember (for myself and others) and yet, somewhat personal to me as I was known by that name for over 25 years in my chosen field.  I use it on many different websites (with different passwords, of course).  It beats trying to come up with some clever screen name every time I join a different site.  I guess I'm just not that ambitious.

While I don't really care what screen name anyone else uses, I think some are so personal that they don't have much meaning to anyone but the user.  OMG16 makes perfect sense when she explains her screen name (thanks!) but the screen name - standing alone - doesn't.  Some screen names are cute, some are clever and some are indecipherable but at least they're all products of the imagination and so, interesting in some way.

I would suggest to OMG16 that if she changes her screen name to also try to include a photo of both her and her son, as she does all the posting.  Also, for those with somewhat opaque screen names, the addition of your 'real' first name at the bottom of your posts tends to personalize you and makes a better 'connection'.  Just a suggestion from

Jim

Hey 16, this is a fun idea.  I did wonder how some people came up with names.  And Jan, I do think you were creative.  I thought Leapyr was a last name or something.  And like Kay said, I originally thought it was lepor.  When I signed on I wasn't being particularly creative that day.  I tried David but it was taken.  Don't know if I tried Dave.  But of course being from Los Angeles I added the LA to David.  Like I said, not very creative.

16,
Great to have you back.  I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your trip to Palm Springs!
I just put my first and middle names together for this site. I wasn't being creative the day I did my profile.  I'm sure I had a headache, but I didn't want it to be offensive to others!
On others I am known as MizMoxie, because I am full of it and other stuff too!
I love reading the reasons folks picked the names they picked.  Oh and Phyl, I think your name suits you, not because of the pearl being your birthstone either!

This is turning out to be a very interesting subject.

I never in a million years would have thought that "Jim Scott" wasn't actually Jim Scott's name.  Next you'll be telling me that sgerrard isn't Steve's real name either  :o

I have to confess, I always wondered about yardtick - I've obviously heard of ticks, but couldn't imagine why Anne Marie would liken herself to a small bug.  Thanks for clearing that one up, Anne Marie  :)

Thanks for saying I'm creative David.  Creative accountants aren't always a good thing - shades of Enron - but we're not always dull either  :D

As for Lorenzo, I really like Il Magnifico  :D

OMG, I'm glad you started this subject; very enlightening!

Good topic, OMG.  I got mine in college but it was "Pooter Ducky" then then I shortened it.   "Pooter" is obvious given my profession (going back to college) with computers.  I still go by "Pooter" from some in college.  I try to keep it from those at my current employer since I tend to use it everwhere in some form or fashion (e.g. PooterDucky is my eBay username), but that doesn't always work. :)

This is a very interesting thread.  It is nice to hear how others came up with their names.  At the time I wasn't feeling very creative, just scared..... So I listed my real name.  It doesn't seem to be a popular name so it was available.  I think if I had calmed down before posting, I would have come up with something else.
But like Jan mentioned, I would have never guessed Jim's name was not his real name.  Very Interesting........   :)

Did you know that you can change your display name? It does not have to be the same as your logon name.

I just entered my typical sgerrard logon name when I first signed up, since that is what I use at work every day. I Never even thought about it.

It turns out you can go to your profile, and edit your "display name", without changing your logon name.

For today, I will try Steve G. Tomorrow, who knows?  :)

I guess I should have used SC162, because that was my ID when I worked at Penneys and wrote that out a hundred times a day, it seemed.  That's my initials and the 162 that they gave me.  I thought I'd put that on my tombstone one day," Here Lies SC162. Visit my Website at www.yesi'mdead.com"  I really believe somebody will put a .com reference on a tombstone one day.

True, urn could be deposited somewhere and a stone added to it I guess. I could design the urn instead!  :)  But, I think I want to be scattered on some snow capped mountain back in Switzerland, somewhere high where the snow ends up in a glacier so I can't be washed down the mountain in one season. Those are my wishes!  LOL

My name was given to me one month prior to surgery after completing my certification to teach yoga.  Every student was given a "spiritual" name by our teacher from India.  The closest definition of "Arushi" means first ray of light.  There were three other names he gave me to choose from and left it up to me.  I chose based on the positive tone, also it represented an "awakening" for me from surgery!  So there you have it and I too am glad to know you are still with us Lorenzo!

Hey, Jan:

I'm not in the witness protection program...honest!   ;D

I know you're just teasing but by way of explanation, that is 'the real me' in my avatar photo.  My wife snapped the photo (a few months ago) because I didn't have anything recent.  Not especially flattering but then, as she pointedly reminded me, I'm not looking for a date, either.  :)

Many writers, actors, circus clowns and other performers - even retired radio disc jockeys - use 'professional' names  Not only do they want a name easy for people to remember but using a 'professional' name offers a modicum of privacy, something almost crucial when using the internet.  Ironically, my 'professional name' is fairly close to the name on my birth certificate.   Besides, everybody calls me Jim.  You can too, 'leper'.  :)

Jim -

for some reason I always seem to refer to you as "Jim Scott" - just naturally goes together.  I think if I said "Jim" that people would be puzzled.  BTW, I was fairly sure the picture was you, and despite the fact that you think it's not that flattering, I really like being able to put a face with a name since most of us have never met in person.  Funny comment by your wife; she's right it's not like we're all on match.com  :D

Yeah, I knew a lot of radio- TV people use other names.  That's why they always have "nice" names.  You'll probably have to look hard to find a radio jock saying "Hey, and welcome to the Otto Von Shimmelhopperfeld Show!"  No Wischnofskes, Wessbechers, Wemhoenoers, or Zumwalts (all names of people I know). Nothing too hard to say, hard to pronounce, hard to spell.  One of my son's friends is a TV reporter.  Her on air name is Carla Castano.  Castano is Italian for Brown.  She's half Italian and her married name is Brown.  Sorry, Carla....I'm giving away your secrets.   ;)

Glad I gave you a good idea Lorenzo!  I thought if I were only a cartoonist, that would make a good cartoon.  Unless, of course, that's where I saw the idea in the first place and have forgotten. That's always a possibility.

I wonder what Brad and Jolie will be naming the twins.  Always interesting to see what the Hollywood crowd will come up with!

OK OK, while we're talking about things in retrospect I should have used my college nickname -- Kaptainbeyond.  Use your imagination.  Interestingly enough, Kaptainbeyond went on to be a Fortune 500 marketing exec.  And by the way Jim, I spent time at the turntables working for an "underground" radio station in 1969 in the days when FM radio was either classical or experimental.

I could have sworn I posted on this thread

I wanted to rant sand rave about something on a public board and tried out several names that made
since but turned out to be taken so punched in soundoff as a an identity and it wasn't taken ... later
people shortened it to Soundy ... some say cause I am fairly sound of mind... they could leave of fairly
and I would feel better about that bit...

I was born Brenda but was called ****y which I shortened to Boo most of my life and still called that by
most  friends and my dad and siblings ... in 4th grade picked up the nick name Brandy from the Looking Glass
song of that name and have not been able to shake that either... not sure why I even have a real name ... and
for some reason that is beyond me I am called Brenda Lou ... middle name is Loraine ... How do you get Lou out of
Loraine ...

I have just settle on Soundy for computer use as it is easier to remember one ID... I use it here ,on the lupus board
I belong to and a couple private message boards that me and some friends have established

Brenda ~ Boo~ Brandy

What's the old saying ... it makes no difference what you call me ,just don't call me late for dinner

Sounds like a law office in Germany!  How'd you like to have to say that every time you answered the phone, "Law Offices of.....(i]W,W,W, and Z[/i]), how may I direct your call?" Wow, that'd be a tongue twister.

And I said, Brad and Jolie's, didn't I.  Gads.  I used her last name for her first name.  Nothing wrong with me! No sir.

Boppie is the name my twin Grandsons used very early.  They already had Grandma, and Grannie in their vocabulary and we decided the name Boppie (which is a type of pillow for babies) was easy.  They could say Bop very early and soon started referring to me as Boppie.  The teachers at school and adult friends know me as Boppie, the twins' Grandma.  I just don't have another first name as far as the boys know.

Some posters read my name as Boopie,   :D  Now there's another silly name.

I knew this would be fun.  Sorry I started the post and then was missing in action again.  My Aunt came into town and so I've been visiting with her.

My goodness I've missed so much.  So Jim is a secret agent and his wife does not want him dating.  Lori does not know who she is but I do know how old she really is.  Jan is a Leper who has leap year twins.  Kay's back in college.  David is an action figure.  Arushi is spiritual, I like that.  Soundy has to many names to remember for those of us with memory loss.  Larry is Laz, now I get that one.  Yardtick is a term of endearment.  Sue is just Sue but is thinking of working at a law office that includes friends and starting a website about being dead.  Lorenzo is Lorenzo and is going to have a dot com on his tombstone.  Phyl is a pearl for real.  Desilu is I Love Lucy.  Steve is pretending to be Phyl and confusing me.  Brendalu is Brenda who likes hot air balloons and as we all are aware is full of it.  Cheryl wishes she had chosen a different name, our newest mossmama is hot stuff, don't you all agree.  Rob wishes he was What the second.  Debbi I completely understand why you chose Debbi.  Jerseygirl you know how much I love you and no explanation is needed.  Cindyj is indeed Cindy J. Thom has onceagain had a recurrence of his tumor, good one by the way.  Pooter is a Duck and I think I'm going to keep my version of his screen name or we will get no where on the PBW.  Glenda is a lovely name and she to is questioning Jim.  Chocolatetruffle, well enough said.  Dan is Daniel and is in Germany. Last but not least Boppie is a baby pillow which all of us mothers should know what it is used for.  Now please do correct me if I am wrong.

We need more people to post their descriptions of their screen names.  I am very intrigued to hear more so let the party continue.

Oh and Brenda we had a lovely time thank you for asking.  16

Yeah, nice recap.  I left that part of how I got my name out on purpose.  Suffice it say that Brendalu isn't the only hot air in them.  ;)

16~
Great recap!!

Boppie~
I wondered about that name - if that was what it was for - I LOVED my Boppie - my mom even had one for when I came to visit  her so I wouldn't have to bring it on the plane!
This is off the subject but I just had to tell everyone what we (& EVERYONE I know) call my Grandma.  Everyone seems to think it is a unique name...ready?  Hi-De-Do...yep, that's Hi-De-Do!!  She used to sing a little song to my brother (he named her) every time she would see him that said Hidee-Do, how are you?  That was his 1st word & it stuck!!  I love my Hi-De-Do and we are forunate that she is still with us.  We celebrated her 88th birthday a couple of weeks ago...she really is not in the best health, but I am glad to have had her in my life for 38 years.  I know a lot of people can't say that!

I never in a million years would have thought that "Jim Scott" wasn't actually Jim Scott's name.  Next you'll be telling me that sgerrard isn't Steve's real name either  :o
Jan (the leper)

Yes Jan, it is true.  Steve's real name is hatmaker.

My screen name...yes, you guessed it.  I'm from Ohio.  :o   I wanted to make it a little interesting, so the capital HI in the middle is my friendly greeting to my fellow ANers.
I would like to believe that my brain tumor had something to do with my lack of creativity for a screen name, but I'd be kidding myself. ::)

Great topic.  I've had a good laugh this evening.  I really needed one.

And just for you, Jim Scott (or whoever you really are  ;) ) my real name is Debbie.  Yes, another Debbie (only with an e) on the boards.

Okay, oHIo, I'll go for the hatmaker name, but I'm not changing my screen name, it will confuse everyone too much. I guess you are stuck with whatever you put in the first day. So, I'm adding it to my personal text instead. Safer that way. :)

Hatmaker, hatmaker knit me a hat.  La la la la, la la la la.  *She sings in her best American Idol imitation voice as the audience cringes and covers their 'good' ear*   ;D

Note to oHIo and K -

don't get your hopes up.  Lori and I were promised hats months ago - I think we were the first ones - and we are still waiting  ::)

I can't speak for Lori, but I'd really like my hat before the cold weather sets in and my BAHA potentially gets frozen  :D

Let's see that gives Hatmaker Steve about 5 or 6 months to "get it together"  ;)

K -  nice story about your grandma.  Love her nickname  ;D

Leper  ;) ...issue solved.  Do a search for the Sew Easy Knitting Machine.  It's for ages 8 and up.  (I think hatmaker might be considered 'and up'.)  Here is the description of the Sew Easy:

"The Sew Easy Knitting Machine is easy to use.  You do not have to have any knitting experience to knit beautiful accessories such as hats, scarves, mittens, blankets and more. "

Now there is NO excuse.  Steve can get started right away and should even have a surplus to sell at the ANA Symposium.

Steve...a matching scarf to helpl protect my fragile facial nerve would be nice, while your at it.   ;D

I originally logged on wiv me real monikker of Deborah given to me by me Mum and Pappy, but these here swabbies made me Captain of the PBW over on the Good Morning thread and the title Captain Deb stuck! That and back in me misspent youth I held a 30-Ton Ocean Operator Unlimited Passenger License for the United States and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Meaning I could operate a sailboat, tugboat, ferryboat, fishingboat, or any type of vessel with an unlimited number of paying passengers up to 30 tons. The boat, not the passengers. The weirdest job I had was doing burials at sea. One grieving widow tried to jump overboard after the casket! That was the last one of those I did.  I went back to the low paying fun job of day sailing.

Well,  this has turned out to be a highly entertaining thread - thanks to OMG for starting it!!  By my calculations, the variations of Deborah/Debbi/Debbie's win!  Oh, what - you mean there isn't a contest for the most popular name???  Crud.  I was so hoping to win something today..  Maybe Jim - or whoever he really is - can make a special dispensation...

Well, thanks for the smile today - I can always count on you guys for that!

Debbi - still spitting stiches

Oh, Steve, I'd love a blanket too!  Don't worry, it'll be "sew easy" for you to make!

I might just have to buy you an Easy Bake oven too - you can knit AND bake.  You're a man of many talents, you Mad Hatter, you!

Lori (ready for my nap - how's that blanket coming?)

Great thread ;D

My screen name is a shortened version of my married name. I added the "i" to stay true to my Italian heritage  :)

OMG 16 - I haven't been on in a while, hope all is well with you.
