Title: for those along the TX/Gulf coast (and inland)
Post by: ppearl214 on September 11, 2008, 05:54:41 am
I'm sending wishes to you all as Ike is deciding what to do in its life. Please stay safe.....wishes and prayers to all those in the targeted/evacuated areas.

Be safe and please check back in when you can.

Thanks, Phyl!

Some of our areas are under mandatory evacuation, as a matter of fact just around the corner from us!  My daughter lives a block away from the bayou so she is evacuating.  My husband and I are shuttering up and sheltering in place unless things change..................I can't handle a repeat of Rita and all of that traffic.
I'll keep updates coming as long as I have power!!  Maybe it will be a "blow by blow!"  ;)

Brenda~
I was wondering about you!!  My in-laws said the same thing about reliving the Rita nightmare!!  Funny story about that though...my in-laws had not been able to get ahold of their son and his family.  They live in West U and my in-laws live in the Memorial area (off I-10).  We'd been in touch several times by cell phone with MIL/FIL and they were a bit concerned about the other family.  They  are both very intelligent (Federal Judge & lawyer), but not very "practical" smart - figured they hadn't filled up or really planned ahead.  They ran into them on the big "parking lot" of a freeway - my BIL was making the boys PUSH the car to save on gas (they had filled up)!!  LOL!!  Isn't that crazy that they "ran into" each other?  You know what a crazy mess that was!!  Needless to say, the kids got in Grandma & Grandad's car - everything is more fun with grandparents - even evacuating!!  ;D
Stay safe!!

Brendalu, be careful!  We're in Cypress (NW side of town) and we're staying put too.  I couldn't handle being in that mess of traffic with two small kids (3 and 8)!  I just hope we're made the right decision.  Time will telll, I guess.  Be safe.

Kaybo, funny story!  It's wild they ran into each other in all that chaos!

Regards,

Brian

We've got our storm shutters up (thanks to a lot of help from my husband's coworker) and they going to my daughter's house to do the same this morning.  We've all been showing for junk food and water.  (Good excuse not to diet).  My brother-in-law is in Beaumont with his haz-mat team ready for that kind of thing and ready to send his crew to help us if we need it.  Our house is gonna be like a B&B!  We have five dogs here, my husband, myself, two daughters, two grandchildren and my neighbor from my old neighborhood (she had been in ICU for ten months last year and two this year) and her Mom (who is here from Canada packing the daughter up to move back there so she can take care of her).  The other grand daughter and her best friend headed to the Woodlands last night to stay with her Dad.  (she thinks he'll have electricity if we don't!)  Priorities you know. Our house is built to withstand 150 mile winds.  Don't know what happens if it hits 151 mph  ;D
Pooter, I lived in your area for quite a while.  My oldest daughter graduated from Cy-Creek in 1989!  Kaybo, I lived in the Memorial area in the '70's!  Small, small world!!
We are pretty close to the action here in d***inson.  Boppie's daughter lives in our neighborhood..  The newspapers this morning are predicting doom for those "hunkering" down that live near Galveston Bay...we'll see.
We accept all prayers and good thoughts.
I , too, will keep y'all posted as long as I can.
Stay safe,
Brenda

Yikes! Hurricanes are no fun.  I was in my house when Class 5 Hugo ripped the roof off it right over my head. Luckily those Danes had built those slave quarters with 2 foot thick stone and coral head walls which protected me and modern man had invented fiberglass shower stalls!  No evacuating a tiny island in the middle of the Caribbean!  Luckily those islands are mountainous with no low-lying areas so flooding wasn't the problem and I was 1/4 mile inland.  It was sooooo loud!  I blamed my hearing loss for years on the storm.  when the eye passed over, it was like someone flipped a switch and turned the whole thing off for about 10 minutes.  I figured the wall eye was what did the rest of the roof in.  My dog was the one who had the bright idea to get in the shower stall! God Bless Laborador retrievers! Smatr critters, they be!

We had no power for 6 months and I had no roof for about as long. .  My stateside landlord collected the insurance but pocketed the money.  He wanted me to moved out, fix the place up and quadruple the rent.  Evictions were prohibited under Martial Law, so there I sat under a blue tarp.  A church group finally showed up and put up a nice temporary roof. The worst part was the mosquitos and no fans.  I finally got a mosquito net from FEMA as they didn't want eveyone getting Dengue or malaria.

So, Brenda and Pooter, Make sure you have plenty of batteries for the radio (I had a ton, but the radio tower blew over and we didn't know what the hell was going on for days!!) and a battery powered fan and a generator!!!!! And if they say leave, YOU LEAVE!!!!!!!!!  Also, plug your good ear!!!!!! The noise can be pretty loud.  Good luck and know that I will be thinking of you and know how stressful this can be.

Watching and Praying, too!

Thanks all, right now the storm surge hasn't hit yet and the 61st St Pier in Glaveston is gone and the waves are huge against the Seawall!  We are just about done with preparations and we will be fine!  The wind is picking up to about tropical force right now so we have a mandatory curfew of 6 p.m. tonight through 6 a.m. Saturday morning.  I've got my ear plug ready!!

We lived 2 blocks from the 61st St pier in an apartment off 61st St in '83 when Alicia hit.  Our son was only 11 months old so we got out of there.  Went to Nacogdoches for 3 nights.  Had friends that stayed and said they'd never do that again.  We came back to only one broken window in the kitchen, wet carpets, pieces of shingles that had blown in and left dents in the walls.  No power for a week (we were lucky).  Our apartments had no screens on the windows so we bought a roll of screen and duct taped it in so the mosquitos wouldn't eat us alive.  I was heating baby food and bottles on the balcony with a coleman stove.  The managers told us if your carpet was wet to rip it out and you would get new.   Needless to say, our son spent a lot of the next 2 months it took to get the carpet, in his playpen.  Couldn't let him learn to walk on concrete floors.

We have a lifelong friend in Hitchcock.  We think he probably went towards San Antonio.  Have close friends in Katy also, and others scattered around the area.

Hope all of you down there are prepared or have gotten out already.  Praying you will all get through Ike, OK.

OH boy we're gonna scare the Bee-jezuz outta these poor people!

Here's what Hugo did to my poor little house:

The house was built by the Danes in the 18th century as slave quarters for a sugar cane plantation. A bunch of connected rooms.  It was surrounded by a huge covered porch! The gray patches are where the workers had recently patched the outside up prior to painting, thank God.  If not, the walls probably would have crumbled like my neighbors did.  During the storm, one of them caved in, and nearly killed her. (once again--fiberglass shower stall!)

The bottom photo is my aunt's beautiful 18th century great house. It was surrounded by ancient mahogany trees. She ended up getting a government grant to restore it and it is truly beautiful once again.

Stay inside you all and Be Safe!!!

As a survivor of Andrew (looking for pics), I know what a hurricane can do.  My prayers are with you Brendalu, Brian, and any of you in that area.  My guess is that there will be power outages, but let us know tomorrow or as soon as you can how you weathered Ike.

I was wondering too - I am more concerned about Brenda (not that I'm not concerned about Pooter) because I believe that she is closer to the action.  However, if I read her post right, hers is one of the houses that is built to sustain up to 150 mph winds - Pooter's may not!  We heard from Dave's mom this morning and my SIL who lives in Sugarland in the "newest" house has the most damage (1/3 of her roof gone - water flowing in - huge mess!).  Dave's brother lives in West U in a pretty new house & they had leakage around the windows & one place in the ceiling.  Dave's parents live in a house built in the early 70's and really don't have any damage.  He did board up the back wall b/c it is all plate glass windows and they have LOTS of HUGE trees (Memorial area).  They said they couldn't get out of their driveway for all the debris, though.
Keep praying...

Everyone,

We're still alive and kicking!  The rain started about 1.  I went to bed and woke up to Jenni about 3 because we'd lost power and some pretty fiece winds.  Power just came back on (for now) a few minutes ago.  We'll see how long it lasts this time.  At least the kids are happier with power. ;)

Has anyone heard from Brendalu?  She's down where she was getting the storm much longer before me.  The upside is that it will stop for her much sooner.  It's still raining and pretty fiece winds right now.  But, we're okay.

Thanks for the concern!

No doubt Brenda and Pooter you both are busy assesing the damage done.  I pray you both are safe and I pray you stay safe during your "clean up" phase.  Wow, looks like there's going to be much to do for all involved.  I am sorry you and your fellow Texans are having to deal with this!

Hey David, you mentioned you went through Andrew, me too.  Where bouts did you ride the storm out?  We faired very well being NW of Ft. Lauderdale, had about 85 knots steady for a few hours is all.  As for Wilma she kicked our butts with the eye wall passing right over our house!  Cat 2, 100+ knot winds sustained for hours.  Can't tell you how awful I felt during that storm all shuttered up and dark inside.  I was having much difficulty getting around and had to shine flashlight near my eyes to quell the nausea.  Candle light wasn't bright enough, and the drop in pressure didn't help any!  It was eery stepping outside during the passing of the "eye".  Looked at my neighbors hair blowing one way, then it started blowing the other way and we looked at one another saying, "Well time to get in, see ya."  That's when all hell broke loose, the other side of the eye is powerful!

I know what Brenda and Pooter must be going through and the weeks afterwards.  Hang tough you guys.

I tried going outside during the eye of Hugo but all the water had made my door swell shut! Plus it was 3 AM.  I ended up climing out of my house over the wall and through the roof the next day.  I did that for 3 days as I didn't want to break down my door and not be able to shut it again.  We had widespread looting and alot of violence--things were pretty scary till the Marines showed up! Good thing I had a Laborador retriever and a sharp cutlass! No one messes wiv this wench.

Thinking good thoughts to all our Texas ANers and hoping you come through this vicious storm all in one piece!  My, that was a doozy!  Our neighbors went to Dallas to see their daughter on Thursday, just in time to get a bucket load of rain, I bet.

And for all the ANer's that Ike's remnants will visit soon, I hope it goes well for you also.

What a mess.

I can only imagine what all of you in Texas - and other areas - are going through  :(

Even here in the Chicago area we are feeling the effects from Ike.  I woke up this morning to a basement flooding with sewer water (eeewww  :P ) and it didn't stop coming in until it was 18 inches deep.  The water fell so fast here the storm sewers couldn't handle it and as a result neither could the sewers.  When it hit 18 inches it stopped and a few hours later it receded.  I am left with a basement full of sewage sludge and many damaged personal belongings.  Ironically since my house is for sale, I had packed all my personal letters and personal family photos in plastic bins and stored them in the basement thinking they would be safe.  But it was not to be.  Many of the bins tipped over and filled with water and the contents literally floated around my basement.  I spent a few hours crying today over things that are irreparably damaged that I'll never be able to replace.

I know this in no way compares to what someone going through a major storm is coping with, but just this little taste of devastation left a permanent mark on my soul.  But I am thankful that my children and I still have a roof over our heads and that we are safe and dry, as I know many, many others are not.   And I am thankful that we only lost a portion of our cherished momentos, as I know others have lost everything.  I pray that those of you caught in this storm have the strength to get through it and I pray that you are safe.

I am so sorry!  That is awful!  Someone told me a long time ago to keep my wedding album up high as theirs had been ruined in a flood (not weather related) so I have always tried to keep that in mind, but you certainly were not anticipating this...I do feel for you...I understand how you are grateful you & yours are OK, but I would be devastated if I lost my pictures & precious momentos!

Jan,

I was so sorry to hear about your flooding and the resultant damage to family pictures, etc. There's a possibility that you may be able to salvage some of the items. My family home in New Orleans was in one of the neighborhoods that was destroyed by the breaching of the levees following Hurricane Katrina three years ago. The house and all its contents were submerged in nine feet of muddy water and sludge for three weeks. My Mother got out safely after the hurricane but we despaired of ever salvaging anything from the house. When residents were allowed back into New Orleans a couple of months after the storm we were able to retrieve her china and sterling silver and a few other "hard" goods, but no furniture, clothing, etc. One photograph album on the top shelf of a closet was okay, but all the other pictures and papers were in bad shape. We weren't able to save any letters, but my sister took many of the photographs and, with the help of a photography restorer, was able to get some very satisfactory results. I don't remember all the details, but it involved drying the pictures and scanning them. Hope you'll be able to save as much as you can.

I had wondered about that too but forgot to write it.  I had another friend that I taught with in Austin and her house flooded while they were on EXTENDED vacation!  It was AWFUL...but she said that many things that she thought HOPELESS were able to be restored.  Let's hope that can happen with your things!

Brian,

Glad to hear you and the family are okay.  I'm guessing Brenda is still without power, but hopefully we'll get word from her soon.

I went through Hurricane Isabel in Virginia Beach (my first hurricane ever, since I'm a Yankee, you know, and we just get snow up there).  It wasn't anywhere near as bad as Ike, and I remember how scary it was to just hear that wind and not know what was going to happen next.  We only had minor damage, a few trees down and some lost siding and roof shingles and a garage door that didn't make out too well.  We did go without power for 11 days though, which was absolutely horrible!  If I never saw another peanut butter sandwich or can of veggies, it would have been too soon!  So, I'm glad you have your power back and I hope it stays that way.  It's hard to entertain kids without electricity when they can't even go play outside!

Jan, I was wondering if you were affected by any of the flooding up there.  I hope the damage is minimal.  It must be hard to lose those personal items, but you and your kids are okay and that's the most important thing.

Looks like someone really ticked off Mother Nature!  Hopefully, she's done now!

Stay safe everyone!

So sorry for all of you affected by Ike.  My husband's family went through Katrina--fairly lucky compared to most, though.  As for pictures, Jan, when my husband's childhood home burned down, rebuilt, then hit by  Hurricane Betsy and Camille, there were no pictures left.  Luckily my husband's mother had been sending pictures to the grandparents and other relatives over the years.  Some of those pictures have come back to my husband's family over the years.  Maybe you have family and friends who have pictures that you can get copies of.  Just a thought, but not all pictures can be replaced.  It is sad.  So sorry to hear of your loss.  Hopefully you will  have the water out of your basement soon.

Blessings to all,

Nancy

Just a quick update.  Everyone's safe.  We have power, but those people in subdivisons on either side of us don't.  I saw a map of the Houston are and they said 90%+ are without power.  So, I count myself lucky in that regard.  We ventured out earlier to go to Church and the Church we go to got flooded, but they had a limited service when we went.  There are some businesses open where I am, but not many.  The last I heard, my youngest daughter's (and Jenni's) school disctrict is closed through Wednesday.  I haven't heard about my work, but last I heard there is still no power so likely not right now.  There are lots without power, ice, etc..  It's BAD around here, but luckily we're okay, no major damage, have power, but otherwise ok.

I hope Bredalu is doing ok.  She's much further south than I am and in the thick of much of this thing..

Talk soon... Thanks for everyone's comments and concerns..

Well Brian, I am very glad all is well with you and family!  That's two down, now one to go.....Brenda will probably be busy for quite some time but I send my prayers for her health and safety.

Seeing the pictures I'm amazed and very sorry for all who are dealing with Ike.

In answer to your question a few posts ago, I was in Miami Lakes during Andrew.  Nothing compared to Cutler Ridge -- but a big mess.  Once you're in the middle of one of those things, you really question your intelligence for not leaving.  I'd never do it again.

wooooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, we got power back forty-five minutes ago!!  We look like a war zone here!  My heart  goes out to the folks in Galveston though.  It is worse than they are showing on television.
We lost a few shingles, a lot of fence (everyone did) and a lot of plans and one storm shutter.  We are ll safe and no worse for the wear!  We had a battery thingy hooked to the car so we could run the TV and a light and the fish tank.  (all the important stuff).  My daughter had some flooding and lots and lots of trees down on her house and around it.  It will take a bit longer to get her back to normal or close.  I'll post pictures as soon as I remember how!  Thanks for all the prayers.  They were answered!!
Hugs,
Brenda

Yay, there she is! Great to hear you are okay, Brenda. And that the fish made it as well! Galveston did look bad in the news I saw, I hope it isn't too terrible.

Best wishes to all  who weathered the big storm of the year.

The peak we got from a boat is that Galveston looks simular to Ground Zero in NYC.  Lots and lots of work to be done there.  Several friends lost all.  We are now on a clean up mission and helping out with warm showers, hot food and fresh clothes.  Lots of folks here won't have power for about two months.  We were the lucky ones.  I hope all thosein the Midwest are staying dry and above the flooding, my prayers go out to them.

I too am very relieved to hear from you Brenda, I was very concerned!  I know you have much to deal with especially helping out your daughter, but thank you for taking time out to give us an update.

Praying still for all who struggle in Texas and north.

David, I smiled regarding your comment and yes, when one is in the deciding stages of whether to leave then finds themselves in the thick of it with hands tied so to speak makes you second guess ones intelligence!

Very relieved to hear from you dear Brendaluwench! The news images are triggering the PTSD I have left over from Hugo.  At least those people have a decent local government to help them out.  Ours in the Virgin Islands was a joke. I waited in a food line for 7 hours and all I got was 2 cans of peaches.  Then I got a phone bill for $300 and hadn't had a phone for 3 months, and I had to wait in line all day to straighten that out. Just keep doling out those showers and helping out where ever you can. Anyone affected by such a catastrophy really appreciates it!!!

We ventured out a little further today to take stuff we had too much of and to deliver ice and just wow!  We are indeed fortunate.
Capt Deb, it is really funny you said that about the phone bill...AT&T called this morning to see if we wanted to change our cell plan so that we could get better service during the aftermath of the storm!!  I laughed and said I'll use my Vonage account now that I have power back on.  My insurance company has already been here to make an assessment and brought a couple of cases of water, some non-persihables and a bunch of other stuff.  I tried to explain that we  didn't need that stuff but they said they had to bring it to us because we were in a disater area.  I was and am impressed by them. I distributed the stuff when we were out and about.
My grandson desperately wanted a Happy Meal so we found one!!  He's is very happy now!
Thanks for all of the prayers.
Not near as bad as Hugo, Capt Deb, and our local, county and state governemnts are working hard to get everything up and running.

Yay, Brenda.  It was like you went off into one of those Black Holes and lost contact with Earth.  So glad all is well.  I do know what you mean about Galveston -- it was the same with Cutler Ridge during Andrew -- it looked like a war zone.  I don't know what it's like near you but to see an area that has every bit of foliage and bark stripped from trees leaving not much more that a wood pole is eeire.

Hope the recovery goes well.

Finally seeing this.  So happy Brendalu is safe and sound.  Thinking of you as you slog through the clean-up and repairs.  No fun >:(

But you didn't blow away to OZ, and I don't mean Australia, either! ;D  And that's a good thing.

Thank you all!  We still look like war zone here!  Power is finally back on in my daughter's neighborhood, but she has more damage to her home than originally thought so the insurance agjuster has to come back.  The insurance adjuster called for an appointment for our home and the soonest one is for October 7!  I'm tired of temporary!!  Temporary is expensive, but if we do permanent we don't get reimbursed.
In the wake of all of this my oldest grand daughter all 5'10" 116 lbs went to step over a baby gate between my kitchen and living room (to keep the too many doggies contained) and got her shoe caught and fell on the tile floor and broke her knee cap.  She is in a leg immobilizer and wheel chair and she is not a happy camper.......  Homecoming is right around the corner and she is bound and determined she will be out of the brace and dancing by then!!
We still have lots of folks here without power and they are pulling the PODs away and no more hot meals or ice for these people.  FEMA is dragging there feet in helping too.  Glaveston has a tent city set up by the Red Cross for those people not able to find homes to rent while they are repairing or replacing theirs.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm when Katrina came through FEMA gave an open pocketbook to those folks and alot of them are still reaping the benefits and have not tried to get jobs or pay for their own housing.  This area opened their hearts, homes and purses for those folks.

Thanks for the updates on the situation.  Now that we are in the midst of a financial crises and the election looming, the national media will probably not step foot in Galveston ever again, or maybe at the 6 mos anniversary.  I guess we could all go to Texas TV websites, but who thinks of doing that, really.

Our thoughts and prayers are still with you.

I haven't been out of the house except to go to the doc since Ike--no gas in this part of the country! Every gas station I passed is just closed.  My husband just picks up the groceries on his way home from work. I'm getting friggin CABIN FEVER and it's not even winter!!!!!

Makes you think how really vulnerable we all are.  A couple of major storms and it has literally stopped thousands and thousands of people in their tracks. But this happens now and then, and eventually, this will work itself out.  Somehow.

There is a retired man in the neighborhood and I've seen him a few times around the streets and visited with him at a garage sale one day.  He drives short distances in this electric golf cart type vehicle, only it's not a golf cart.  It qualifies as a wheel chair and he can actually drive it into a store.  He can drive it legally in the bicycle lane.  He's got a yellow canopy on top with fringe!  It looks like something you'd see in Florida or something.  He just puts around all over in his little electric cart.  I thought we might all end up with one of those one of these days. He gets like 30-40 miles to the charge.  Something like that.
