Friday night went to bed & everything was fine, I woke up Saturday morning & I noticed right away that my tongue was numb, I didn't have anything hot or cold to eat or drink, now it's Thursday & it hasn't gone away at all...I know I need to see a doctor but I don't know if I should call my regular doctor or a dentist or a specialist of some kind, I've been doing some research on this issue & I'm not really finding anything that has helped me, so if there's anyone that has any info for me it would be greatly appreciated, by the way I'm not even sure if I'm posting to the right forum so excuse me if I've mis-posted. It may be nothing serious, but good for you that you are checking it out.
I don't want to alarm you needlessly, but you are right to be concerned. What you are describing reminded me of my very first symptom. I had this numb feeling, as if my tongue was burnt on one side only. This lasted for a couple of months, but I didn't know what to make out of it and I thought that something had irritated my tongue. So I changed toothpaste and tried some mouth rinses. Then, after a couple of months I started feeling numb around my lips, and this spread quickly to the rest of my face on the right side. Long story short, I mentioned this to my dentist who said that I should ask my GP to order an MRI. Which he did, and the AN was discovered.
The medical explanation of this is the tumor is pressing on the trigeminal nerve (the sensory nerve), and causes these problems.
I honestly hope this is not the case for you. But I think it will be a wise idea to visit your doctor to follow up with this. Don't let him/her brush this off (this is what my doctor had done when I mentioned this during my regular physical).

Hi,
I also hope that your symptom is not from an acoustic neuroma, but my only symptom of my tumor is what you are experiencing now. Please see your doctor/ENT and insist on having a MRI with contrast. Please let us know how it goes.

HI from another Texan!! Where are you located? I am in the Houston area. I didn't have a numb tongue...just every other symptom and unfortunately nobody put them together! :P I hope that you DON'T have an acoustic neuroma. but I do hope that you get some answers. I know it is very frustrating not knowing!

Wow A Huge THANKS to ya'all for responding to my post, I called my Dr.'s office today & wouldn't you know it they're closed today, I'm trying not to make a big deal of this with my family but everything I've read has me very concerned, I mean I've read everything from Stroke to Ms, to AN..I'd hate to go to an ER with my Tongue hanging out, trying to make light of this Ha Ha right, so I think I have a decission to make & talk with hubby (he also did research & is concerned) & decide to go to an ER or wait till Monday & try & get an appt. sometime this month ( we all know how preshish Dr.s time is) think ER would be best route they have all the Equipment there on-site, but I still feel funny about going in "With My Tongue Hanging Out" Sorry I find that Funny, will keep ya'all posted and thanks again for the encouragement!

Sure hope you have answers soon for whatever is causing it.

Hey All, went to my primary care Dr. Monday, he ordered 2 Mri's an orbital & brain,both with & without contrast, which is scheduled for Monday the 28th, so hopefully I'll get some answers and treatment if required, so until then, I can only drive myself crazy with wondering. Very frustrated, but hopeful, it's all in GODs hands, my thoughts & prayers are with you all, Thank you all again God Bless & be kind to one another.

This was my first symptom, followed about 3 weeks later by hearing loss. It lasted for a full YEAR. I then went in for Proton Beam radiation for 6 weeks in Boston. For the first time in a year, after about 4 weeks of treatment, the tongue burning/pain went away. Unfortunately, I am now 2 months out of radiation, and it's back. Very frustrating, but definitely glad you are going to be tested.
