"This work is the most clearheaded documentation to this point of what's actually happening in the brain's cortex in ways that account for the ongoing genesis of sound," said Michael Merzenich, professor emeritus of otolaryngology at UC San Francisco and inventor of the cochlear implant, who was not involved with the research. "As soon as I read the paper, I said, 'Of course!' It was immediately obvious that this is almost certainly the true way to think about it."
See here for a summary of the UC Berkeley study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/09/110912144247.htm

Ellen .....
Thanks for sharing these links to new research in the treatment of tinnitus. As with many other new treatments, it always takes longer to prove the effectiveness of it than we would like. At least there is hope because the researchers are not giving up exploring new avenues.

It would be awesome if someone could figure out an effective treatment for tinnitus.
I, thankfully, don't suffer from it, but lots and lots of people do. ANers and non-ANers alike.
