Title: One small step for mAN.....
Post by: lori67 on February 16, 2009, 01:29:29 pm
One giant step for Lori...

I finally got brave enough to post a picture of myself!  I had my nerve graft surgery at the end of September so I'm about 5 months post op.  My lip on my AN side is actually up higher than my good side.  I can make it look even when I look in the mirror, but I haven't mastered the art of coordinating my tongue movements to make my face move without the visual input yet.  I start PT tomorrow, so hopefully we'll figure out how my face is wired now.

And pay no attention to the bad hair day.  It's a holiday - I'm allowed to look messy!   :D

Lori:

You look really good. Thanks for sharing. Good luck with your P.T.

Something that I'm sure only i notice...But after my post-op experience with facial weakness, my smile got wider on the AN side.

Lori:

You look good!  Certainly not like a person who suffered facial paralysis.  Oh, and your hair looks O.K. to me - but what do I know?  ;)

Looking great Lori!

I could only dream of having that much good looking hair.  In fact the hair looks so good, I didn't notice that anything about the lips.  Congrats on the surgical results and continued best of luck with the PT.

Cheers!

Thank you so much for all your kind words!  They mean a lot!  It's nice to hear things like that from my family, but it means even more coming from those who really know what it's like!

You guys really know how to make a girl feel good about herself!   :)

And Ken, I'm due for a haircut - I could send you what they cut off and you could glue it to your own head!    Probably keep you warm up there in Canada!

Hey, Lori!  Wow, you look great.  So glad for you after all you've been through.  And, you do not look old enough to have a daughter already out of the house!

Well, here's my secret...the facial weakness cuts down on the amount of wrinkles - and Loreal takes care of the grey hair my kids have given me!   ;)

Oh, and the scratch under my eye is from being attacked by a tree while doing yard work!  Good thing I didn't poke my whole eye out!

And Steve, just think how much better my hair would look with one of those snazzy knit hats.....

I showed my husband some of the posts last night and he said "but I've been telling you that you're beautiful".  He just doesn't get how that doesn't count!  I think he's afraid if he doesn't say that, I won't make him dinner anymore!   :D

Lori, I left a reply here earlier -- I truly did! -- but it's not gone so I probably hit the preview button instead of post or something equally squirrely.

I am so very happy that your nerve jump surgery was so successful. Your recovery seems to be ahead of the curve as well. Are you going to be a poster girl for your doctor?

Ha, see I hit the right button that time.

I just wanted to add that it is wonderful that the nerve jump option is there for those whose facial nerve does not recover after surgery. When I woke up from surgery with facial paralysis I thought that was it forever. I was so relieved to find out that (1) the facial nerve can recover and (2) there are options if it doesn't.

Success stories are so important to give hope to the newly paralyzed.

Lori,
Wish I looked that great, and I haven't had surgery yet . . . who knows if I ever will at this rate.  Hey, maybe I should go to LA and make a vacation of it!

a little late here, but Lori you look great.  You are an inspiration to us all.   The nicest compliment I have received since the surgery was from a fellow ANer who said she couldn't wait to look like me (her surgery was 2 months after mine)  I turned around and said it to another person who was 6 months ahead of me!!    The encouragement is contagious!

Aw, you guys are so good for my ego!   ;D  Thank you so much - it really helps and means so much coming from people who understand.

Sara, I think I should be a poster girl for my doctor!  The very first time I saw him, the nurse told me I was his favorite patient, which was odd since I'd never met him.  I told her I hoped he felt that way after he met me!!  Turns out I was his favorite because I had none of the typical symptoms of an AN - no hearing loss, no dizziness, no tinnitus - just a numb face.  I guess he likes to have a unique patient every now and then.  If I had a dollar for every time I've been told I was a unique patient in the past 2 years, I think I could fix the economy all by myself!
