Title: GOTCHA! wooohooo!!
Post by: jaylogs on August 02, 2011, 09:44:50 pm
Greetings one and all...so to recap my story I had a BAHA surgery done in Feb, and it wouldn't heal so I had to undergo another surgical procedure to cover up the site and get it all healed up. A week ago last Friday I underwent another procedure to uncover the post and put the abutment back in.   Today I had my followup and it is healing very nicely. I also got to put on the processor! :) Yay! So now I have to get used to it.  It's hard to tell if it's really working yet, I haven't been in any real good areas where I can put it to good use.  But anyways, that's where I am at so far...thanks to all for your well wishes during this whole ordeal! To all those looking to get one, my situation is not the norm.  Thanks again guys!
Jay

I refuse to have a screw in my head...but I am curious:)

It's not a screw - more like a rod.  Anyway, it's not as bad as you'd think.  Don't knock it 'til you've tried it  ;)

Despite Jay's problems  :'(  the surgery and recovery are typically swift and without complications.  Guess Jay's just more special than most of us  :-*

Three years post implant, I honestly don't even notice the rod anymore.  It becomes second nature to you - I'd liken it to someone who starts wearing contact lens; over time they just become a "part" of you.

Thank you all for the well wishes.  Well, I've been wearing this for a few days now...hard to explain how it is...since I already had some hearing in that ear it hasn't really been like wow, what a difference kind of feeling.  It definitely helps though, as if someone is on that side talking where before I would really have to concentrate on what they are saying, now not so much which is really nice!  Clarice, I hope you are getting good feelings with yours! And yes Jan, I've been called special a number of times...and not all usually in a good way! :)  So anyways, again, thank you all for the support...greatly appreciated! :)

Jay .....

Don't you just love not having to twist your back to hear someone and not having to position yourself carefully when choosing a seat somewhere?

Even though I am totally deaf in my non-hearing ear, I still did not have that "wow" feeling either when it was attached.  However, as the audiologist explained, when sitting in her small office, with her on my "good" side, I would not have had trouble hearing her without the hearing assist.  But ....... when my husband talked on the other side, I suddenly realized I could hear him without turning around.  Just to test it, I covered my "good" ear and then I had the "wow" factor kick in when I could hear him clearly and normally.  It does sound a bit like it is coming through a speaker system, but very natural sounding overall.

If you, or anyone else is interested, my audiologist gave me some exercises to assist the brain to retrain dealing with incoming sounds from the device.  Just PM me and I will be glad to send them on to you.

As the audiologist explained, I do not really want to know the device is working, just that it is!  In other words, the Ponto/BAHA should not overpower the natural hearing from the other side.

Jay, I would continue to test yourself in different situations (that's what I am doing) and then have the audiologist tweak the settings until you arrive at the best combination for you.

Best thoughts.  Clarice

Congratulations Jay!!!!  I hope all goes well this time.  I have been fitted for the Cros aid and am doing well with it.  I do have some hearing in  my AN ear so as you said it wasn't WOW but so nice to hear people on your affected side.  I still wish I would have more sound direction but I will deal with it.  Nancy  (tweety)
