Title: Shower Time
Post by: windinthesails on October 16, 2006, 01:34:18 pm
Hey There,
Every time I take a shower my AN side eye hurts and gets really red and it has gotten to the point that I hate showers (and I use to be a person who loved them ;)). I was wondering if anybody else was having the same problem and if they had a solution? Any advice is welcomed.

Is it from soap getting into it???  I work real hard not to get it in a position where the water will open my eye.  Then I have to towel dry my eye every time I get my face wet.  I don't have any good advice as I am just careful....I was told to use Johnson's baby shampoo, but my hair felt like nasty straw after I did, so I gave that up.

Soap or something must be in it, sometimes I have found I eyelash in my eye when its been red ...

showing is the BEST part of the day for me .. I get it hot and steamy .. and with all the humidy my eye starts to fell like normal again. I do find that I need drops as soon as I get out ... with all that water , my real tears get all washed away and the shower water evaporates quickly.  It just become part of my morning routine ... Brush teeth,Shave, shower, drops, dressed, and feed the dog --- off to work I go

I used to have the same problem of my eye turning red in the shower.  I have no feeling in it so it didn't hurt though.  Actually, it's better that it hurts so that you know there's a problem.  To solve that problem I would shower with swimming goggles on.  I did that for about 5 months.  I also switched to baby shampoo.  I put drops in both before and after my shower just to make sure there is enough lubrication.

I wouldn't face the shower nozzle for the longest time, just stood there backwards and let the water run down from above and in a very gentle spray pattern.  I think the chlorine in the water is hurting the eyelids.

Suggestion for bath or showers if you have dry eye issues
- put some of the overnight type eye lube in your eye just before you go in
the thicker type of eye oil will protect against soap
- or salt water in the sea - or bleach in the pool  etc
you simply clear it out when your done
best regards

As you can see it's not an unusual problem...I used to always have a red eye from the shower and thought I was getting my eye closed enough then found out that it wasn't closing all the way (eye dr told me after having him check my red eye)  Baby shampoo did help and keeping an extra non soapy wash cloth by to hold over my eye when rinsing the soap from my face and shampoo out of my hair.

My eyes always got red after shower even before the surgery - I use  allergy eye drops that get's the red out.   Since the surgery I also do the "hold right hand over right eye" when rinsing out the shampoo, conditioner.   The scariest thing was right before I returned to work I HAD to dye my hair (oh the vanity).    That was an experience!! And I'm due for my second dye job (OH GOD!!)   Think I'll wait till next week (scaredy cat!)   Nancy
