ANA 18th National Symposium Recap - July 2007

Philadelphia: Visiting the Past... Discovering the Future

Sponsored by: The Department of Neurosurgery, Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia

Acoustic Neuroma Association held its 18th National Symposium July 13-15, 2007 at The Doubletree Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. The Symposium was sponsored by the Department of Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Medical College under the leadership of David W. Andrews, M.D.

Special thanks go to Dr. Andrews and our Major Sponsors for the symposium-BrainLAB, David Weinberg Family Foundation and Stryker-and all of our sponsors.

Agnes Garino, ANA Board of Directors President, welcomed 300 acoustic neuroma patients, family members, friends and health care professionals at the opening session on Friday. "ANA symposiums offer all acoustic neuroma patients - whether pre- or post-treatment, or watch & wait, the opportunity to learn important information to help you deal with your acoustic neuroma," Agnes Garino stated in her welcome comments. Approximately 40% of the attendees were patients who were newly diagnosed and/or in observation mode-emphasizing the change in the type of patient who attends the symposium due to earlier acoustic neuroma diagnosis.

There were many opportunities to become better educated about all treatment types for acoustic neuroma and all complications that occur post-treatment. On Saturday at the general session, the group gathered to listen to presentations made by--
  • Dr. Fred Barker on What is New in our Understanding of What Causes Acoustic Neuromas
  • Dr. William Slattery on What is New in the Restoration of Hearing
  • Dr. John Tew, Jr. on Cranial Nerve Sparing Surgery of Acoustic Neuromas
  • Dr. David Andrews on Comparison of Radiosurgery / FSR Outcomes
  • Dr. Richard Wiet on Items of Interest from 5th International Conference on Acoustic Neuroma, Barcelona, Spain
  • Ginny Fickel Ehr and Dr. Albert L. Rhoton, Jr., Founders Address
  • Dr. David Andrews, Dr. John Tew, Jr., Dr. Derald Brackmann, Dr. Steve Chang, Dr. Marc Schwartz and Dr. Thomas Willcox, Jr. participating in Panel Discussion - Case Presentations

The Symposium offered workshops on a variety of topics ranging from eye problems, facial re-animation techniques and paralysis treatment options, headaches, tinnitus, balance issues, coping with emotional impact of AN treatment, hearing loss options and devices, watching and waiting, bilateral tumor issues, cognitive changes and depression, genetics of AN, insurance issues, and CyberKnife and Novalis radiation treatment options and Consultants Corner for the Newly Diagnosed.

If you didn't have the opportunity to go to the Philadelphia Symposium, please take advantage of the audio CDs and MP3's that are available and order one or several workshops or general sessions of interest to you. You can place your order online at www.anausa.org or by calling the ANA office.

Very special moments at the 2007 symposium included words from ANA Founder, Ginny Fickel Ehr who reviewed the history of ANA, a very heart warming presentation by Dr. Albert Rhoton, Jr. highlighting his early ANA involvement and leading the Medical Advisory Board, Gala Banquet 25th ANA Anniversary celebration, Friday Gatherings with roundtable discussions, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital tour and inspirational speaker Sandra Strauss.
