facial pain and numbness

HI, everyone - I have a question about post-surgical facial pain (and numbness).....I am a care giver for someone who had surgery (Middle Fossa Approach) over a year ago. One cm tumor successfully removed from left and full recovery with no facial paralysis and balance concerns are manageable - that's the good part. The bad part is left side facial pain (and numbness) is very bad (a.k.a. trigeminal neuralgia) ever since. Gabapentin somewhat helpful but with "not so great" side effects. Docs have offered a couple of other drugs which were not helpful (and had worse side effects). Has anyone else out there had this experience and, if so, can you offer any suggestions?
