Suppliies question for scleral lens
« on: December 19, 2014, 09:04:35 am »
My question is if it is important what kind of saline to soak my lens in at night?  I soak the lens in Clear Care two nights a week for extra cleaning, have been using Unisol 4 the other nights as well as for filling my lens while wearing.  After my checkup last week, he suggested using the nebulizer solution, which has worked very well for me.  I forgot to ask him at the time, but would it be okay to soak the lens in a cheaper saline at night?  I know I need the preservative-free while it is in my eye, but I'm just looking to cut costs wherever I can.

I am so thankful for the lens!

Hi Cheryl-
Since my doctor originally gave me separate soaking, cleaning and saline solutions, I use them all every day.  I use Unisol 4 for wearing the lens, but use RDS Disinfecting storage or Boston Simplus for storage/soaking.  I also use a cleaner before I put my lens in.  I alternate between a Boston cleaner and one from Naturalens with no particular preference. Since I have to use an ointment at night, it takes me several insertions and washings to get all the ointment out of my eye each morning.  I think it's worth it though.  Using that eye again is awesome!
Hope that helps.

Like Lori, my eye doctor recommends separate cleaning, soaking and saline. I would be really hesitant to soak my lens overnight in saline alone, since the lens holds the same liquid right on the surface of our eye for such a long period of time.

I use cleaning and soaking solutions from myeyesupply.com and nebulizer vials for saline. If you are interested, I have written blog posts about my scleral lens. The most recent on is http://www.sarahartman.com/have-scleral-will-travel/ and includes links to the previous posts as well as places where I buy my supplies.

My eye doctor also encourages me to call or e-mail if I have any questions about my lens or lens care. I think it would be fine for you to call and ask.

You can use hydrogen peroxide on the nights you do not use the clear care.  It is almost the same and fully sanctioned by Boston Foundation for Sight.
