AN cause or is it something else?
« on: October 30, 2014, 09:09:14 pm »
Once you have this thing every time something go wrong ache or pain you wonder it the thing in our head or even if we have surgery causing it or do I NOW have something else wrong.
I am in process of selling and buying a new home so have been working myself hard - so anyway I have been have pains up and down my neck on the AN side -- stress or AN acting up?
I had radiation 2.5 years ago -- how do you determine who to see or to go see anyone at all?
Anybody else have this happen to them?
thanks
1.4 cm diagnosed 01/12
significant hearing loss rt side
total balance loss rt side - AN side -
left side already compensated (who knew)
Radiation completed May 2012 - all systems are GO -- so happy I chose radiation near home.

I've had neck pain off and on for a couple of decades and coincidentally was on the same side as my AN. The last couple of years while I was battling my AN it got really bad so I had cervical X-rays done in early 2013 and it turned out (as it always has) to be arthritic and disc deterioration in the cervical vertebrae. It also didn't help that I weighed 300 lbs back then. A year later, after losing 100 lbs, I don't have neck pain anymore.

I looked back over your previous posts but you've never mentioned your age. I'm in my late 60s.

Could be stress related or you could have age related arthritic changes going on.

I think your first step should be to have your neck X-rayed and see how things look in there.

Pain is not usually a symptom exhibited by ANs.  The most common symptoms associated with ANs are vertigo or dizziness, balance problems, and hearing loss or tinnitus. The problem you described sounds more like a myalgia or muscle related pain caused by and/or aggravated by stress; the first clue was you stating that you have been working yourself hard. These are called musculoskeletal disorders and in a nutshell, that means trigger points develop within muscles (in your case, the muscle alongside and back of the neck called the sternocleidomastoid). These trigger points are like muscle knots or charley horses that form within muscles and they refer pain to different parts of the body. Different muscles refer pain to specific parts of the body. I was a TMJ specialist when I was in private dental practice (32 years) and treated many cases involving muscle disorders. My advice would be to see a physical therapist or chiropractor first since you had been treated with radiation and the success rate of that is well over 95%. If muscle therapy does not rid you of your pain, then see your neurosurgeon. You can probably not see any professional at all and try to self treat yourself at home. Muscle problems like yours respond well with moist heat but in order for it to do any good, it must be able to penetrate deeply and for at least 15 minutes so do not use hot wash cloths because they lose heat rapidly. A moist heating pad would work better. That and easing up on your work load should take care of your problem IF it is muscle related. If you see a professional, muscle problems like this respond faster with electrotherapy (High volt EGS) and massage or manipulation. Ultrasound also works but is much slower.
Diagnosed with 19x16x19mm cystic AN right side on 7/2013
MRI on 3/2014 showed AN increased to 21x20mm
right side 70% hearing loss, tinnitus, balance issues
