personality changes
« on: October 17, 2014, 03:09:13 pm »
Hi all,

Are there any Forum readers/posters that have noticed a personality change, possibly due to their AN?

Thanks,

Rod
74year old male, 8.3x7.3x6.5 mm AN on 10-28-13.  MRI on 12-30-13 showed no growth.  Imbalance issues and mild tinnitus.  MRI on July 13, 2014 showed no growth.  Still on W & W and taking baby-aspirin regimen.  MRI in July, 2016 show slow growth (1.1 cm).  MRI on July 24, 2017 was 8.2 x 8.6 x 8 mm!

Hi Rod,

I haven't noticed any change, although it's only been 1 yr & 2 months since I was diagnosed.  Changes may have happened during the years my AN had been growing and I may not have noticed anything.

One thing -- because my right side hearing isn't very good, I'm not too crazy about attending large/loud gatherings because I have a really hard time hearing people.

8/2/13 - diagnosed 1.9 CM right side; 1/13/14 - MRI it got bigger!; 2/10/14 - GK; 8/18/14 - shrinking; 8/17/15 - still shrinking, reduced symptoms

Hmmm, now that I think about it I wonder if my AN has anything to do with my sudden purchase of a 1996 Dodge Viper. My friends tell me it's out of character. But I think I might just be 28 years late for my mid-life crisis. Now where do I find those cheerleaders?  ;D ::)

Can't post my own photos so here's one that looks like mine:

I think having any kind of major health crisis is likely to cause changes in one's personality, depending on how serious it is etc.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can happen in our cases, tha will cause a personality change.
My surgeon told me there can be a "chemical" change when one has such a surgery, that may or may not re-balance over time, that may cause mood disorder and therefor a change to one's personality.
Depending on "losses" one has from surgery self esteem can take a hit too (facial nerve loss etc).
Pre-op I was never told anything about the tumor having caused personality changes.
Post -op I would say I changed, some for the good, some for the bad.....some was temporary and other changes remain present.....I blame my first marriage on the tumor (I shouldn't have ever married that guy, it's my story and I'm sticking to it)

1st AN surgery @ age 23, 16 hours
Loss of 7-10th nerves
mulitple "plastic" repairs to compensate for effects of 7th nerve loss
tumor regrowth, monitored for a few years then surgically removed @ age 38 (of my choice, not medically necessary yet)

Only personality change I've experienced since I was "gifted" with my AN is that I'm more grateful for all the things in my life.

My AN was not a death sentence, like any number of medical conditions I could have been diagnosed with.

Life is good.  I'm SSD now and wear a BAHA, but there are SO many worse things in life.

I thank God and count my blessings every day  :)

Left AN 3.0 cm (1.5 cm @ diagnosis 6 wks prior) SSD. BAHA implant 3/4/08 (Dr. Battista) Divino 6/4/08  BP100 4/2010 BAHA 5 8/2015

I don't actually "make" trouble..just kind of attract it, fine tune it, and apply it in new and exciting ways

Thanks for the replies, everyone,

Not sure if my personality has changed for better or worse, but sometimes I get very irritated due to minor things, especially when I am tired.  I was searching for some reasonable explanation, other than I am a jerk, and thought that the AN, might be pressing on some brain structure that somehow control personality, but it appears from these comments, that this does not seem to be the case for all who replied (admittedly, not a huge sample base).

Since I am on W & W, and taking one baby aspirin per day for tumor growth mitigation (as per the article in a recent ANA newsletter), I haven't noticed any further degradation of my balance or tinnitus issues, so all is good from that perspective.  Things could be a whole lot worse from all the postings I have seen on here.

I don't know if any of you saw the school shootings in Marysville, Wa., but that is about 25 miles from where I live.  My wife and I square dance in a Marysville school building (not the HS) so it kind of hit home for us.  Still no indication as to why it happened.  What a terrible tragedy for all involved.
