Getting second opinion
« on: September 01, 2014, 09:15:14 am »
Hello, I have a small AN 5mm by 9mm on right side.Increased hearing loss, imbalance ,dizziness and extremely loud tinnitus .Had consult with neurosurgeon in my hometown. He answered all my questions. Basically have 2 options surgery mid- fossa. Or radiation.
I have appointments with Dr.Hirsh a Neuro- otologist & Dr.Gardner a neurosurgeon in Pittsburgh @ UPMCPresbyterian Hospital.Hopefully ,this second opinion  will give me more info regarding both treatment options and  provide a better understanding enabling  me to  decide what is best for me.
Has anyone out there seen either of these two physicians?

While I did not have treatment from those doctors, I can tell you UPMC is a major medical center and has extensive experience dealing with AN's. UPMC installed the first Gamma Knife in the country in the 1980's. Dr Lundsford has more experience using Gamma on AN's than probably anyone in the country. UPMC neurosurgeons are also experienced with microsurgery. Good luck.

UPMC has an extensive history and a great name with Gamma Knife.  Best of luck and keep us posted.
Dx 2.6 cm Nov 2012, 35% hearing loss.  Grew to 3.5 cm Oct 2013.  Pre-op total hearing loss, left side tongue numb.  Translab Nov 2013 House Clinic.  Post-op no permanent facial or other issues.  Tongue much improved.  Great result!!
