Looking for Boston Contacts
« on: September 17, 2011, 07:38:44 pm »
I have an apt with Dr. Hadlock at MEEI next month. I will be traveling from SC. I have a procedure scheduled for Oct 13 and then a follow up apt on the 14th. Not being familiar with the area, I am hoping for input from anyone about the area around MEEI and/or the airport. As of right now, I will be traveling solo.
Thanks,
Susan

Hi,

My husband grew up in Boston. He said the hospital is about 45 minutes from the airport depending upon traffic. Supposed to be an excellent hospital. Boston also has a local support group and if you look on the ANA website you can find the name of the support group leader. I met her at the symposium and she would probably be a great source of information for you. If you can't find call the ANA and ask them for her contact information. Good luck!

Hi Susie

Too many of us local to Boston to help. Shame really... we have a local brunch scheduled the weekend of your procedure but we will most certainly be thinking of you and raising a glass to your wellness at the brunch. Many local Boston names can be found on the current "RSVP" list enclosed within this thread:

http://www.anausa.org/smf/index.php?topic=14599.105

Look for MZB475/Laura

She is the local ANA Metro Boston Support group leader that ombrerose was mentioning that she met at the ANA symposium (and my travel co-hort in crime).  You can PM/email her here.... or any of us local to Boston to help.

To go from Logan Airport to MEEI/Mass Gen Hospital (they are connected  ie: on the same complex) is literally a VERY short taxi ride.  I am only 15-20 mins (on a good day ie: no traffic) from MEEI/MGH so I'm more than happy to help.  What in particular are you looking to know about the area? I can tell you that MEEI/MGH overlooks the Charles River and the famous "Hatchshell" where the Boston Pops play every July 4.... facing Cambridge (ie: immediate view of MIT).

More than happy to help....

Hi and Good Morning,
I used to be from Boston and would take the T  (subway or Metro) in to Boston.   There is a stop at the hospital if you are feeling well enough to ride there, but you have to take a shuttle to the T.   I think it would be better for you in this case to take a taxi to the hospital which should probably cost you $20.   I took a taxi just across the Longfellow bridge by the hospital to MIT and it cost me $20 plus tip.

Alternatively you might want to take a hotel bus in to the hotel.   I saw buses that go to the hotel.   You can ask when you make the reservation and they'll let you know.

Wishing you good thoughts for your trip and surgery.
Hugs,
Mei Mei

Thanks for the helpful info. Not knowing the area, I am mostly not sure where to book my hotel. I want to be close enough the MEEI that a taxi ride will be feasible. According to Mapquest, the Brookline area looks good. Is that a good guess?
Did Hadlock's asst compared my procedure to a root canal as far as the pain. Since I've never had one of those either, I don't want to be to far away from a resting place after the procedure.
Thanks,
Susan

Hi Susan,

There is a Holiday Inn within walking distance of MEEI.  It is their Beacon Hill inn.  I am staying there the night before my surgery at MGH.  I told them about my surgery and I got a discount.   :)   Good luck with your procedure.

Marriott Cambridge and Sonesta Cambridge are just across the Longfellow (Salt and Pepper) bridge from the Eye and Ear.   See how you do on Priceline.com for the Marriott.   They also have a shuttle from the Airport and you can get settled, then walk across or taxi across the bridge to MEEI.

Sending you great thoughts for a great appointment.
Sincerely,
Mei Mei

Little pricey over on the  Cambridge side BUT..... priceline or hotels.com may help.  Do you have AAA?  They offer discounts as well.

Just a thought....

I agree that Cambridge is pricey but sometimes you get a good deal with Priceline.

One of the recommended hotels is the Constitution Inn.  They also give a medical discount.  Does anybody know anything about that hotel?
Thanks,

Dear Boston AN friends,
A big thank you to each of you for the advice and support regarding my adventure in Boston. The procedure was a success. I had the stitches removed this week and can already see an improvement with my smile. I will see my facial nerve therapist in December. If I decide to have the tendon transfer, hopefully we can at least meet for dinner.

Dear Susan,
I'm so happy for you that everything went smoothly for you at the Eye and Ear and that your smile is coming back.    We travel a long road together.    Hope your accomodations went well in Boston.   Heal well day by day.
