I had the 12/7 done about one month after my AN surgery.  It took about 3 months before I saw movement.  I have a good closed mouth smile and fair open mouth smile.  Resting my face is ok.  a slight droop on the bad side of my mouth.  Speech is ok,  it took a little while to adjust.  Only stayed one night is the hospital,, had a lot of swelling for a couple of days.o have trouble when I eat the bad side moves more because of my tongue moving.  Karen

Hi everybody,

During the past week or so, I have started to feel a pull/twitch in my lower lip on the AN side.  It lasts for a few seconds and goes away. Did anyone experience the same thing?

Other than Lori, did anyone experience swallowing issues after the jump graft?  I am not sure whether it was Lori or someone else who spoke like they had marbles in their mouth.  Did anyone experience something similar?

Thanks,
Dils

Hi Everybody,

I got a date for my jump graft.........21st April (9 weeks after my AN surgery). The doc said I will have to stay in hospital for 1 to 2 days max and the surgery will take about 2 hours.  I am excited and scared too!!!!! I have recently migrated to Australia and don't have a lot of family or friends here. Hope everything will go well!

I do apologize about my comment RE: neurosurgeons. I was not trying to put them down in any way, was just just trying to simplify explanation. My bad. Neurosurgery is the hardest of the medical specialties. Here in Pittsburgh anyway, both a neurosurgeon and a neurotologist perform AN excision surgeries, with each doing a different part, as was mentioned in a previous post.
Two great books about neurosurgeons if you are interested (one is specifcally about Peter Janetta, the pioneer of the technique of MVD for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm) are: Working in a Very Small Place and When the Air Hits Your Brain

Jan,
Wow, I would have been REALLY impressed if you came up with that definition on your own!
Maureen

I'm not a doctor and I don't try to pretend I am.  If I made up the definition of a neurosurgeon I'm confident I'd get it wrong.

My AN surgery was done by a neurotologist and a neurosurgeon and I have nothing but the utmost respect for both of them.

In my eyes, they are both incredible men and phenomenal doctors; I'm sure many others feel the exact same way about their AN doctors.

I don't actually "make" trouble..just kind of attract it, fine tune it, and apply it in new and exciting ways

I had my 7/12 jump done about 10 months after my surgery because they thought it would get better. My paralysis was complete, and it took about 8-9 months to get the first bit of movement. I didn't have any problems with my tongue and still don't, I wouldn't have even been able to tell that they did it. My neck hurt and I couldn't really turn it for a few days or a week. After a solid month or two of movement I've got a little more movement, but I need to use my tongue for anything right now. Hope that helps!
