Title: Will an Acoustic Neuroma show up on a CT scan?
Post by: TR4guy on August 14, 2010, 11:50:32 pm
Hey folks,

Anyone happen to know if an Acuousic Neuroma will show up on a CT scan?

I understand CT scans can have "image slices" of 1.5mm  while MRI's are usually at 5mm spacing between images.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

I am NOT a Doctor.

But my fathers Thyroid tumor showed up just fine on a CT scan at the Vets Hospital. I image CT of heads arn't the normal because of the RADs. (radiation)

AN's will show on a CT, yes.  As a matter of fact, for radiation patients such as myself and others having forms of AN radiation, CT's tend to be used to help with the "mapping" of the AN radiation treatment.  I had MRI and CT used in the mapping of my Cyberknife (CK) treatment.

Hope that helps

Really?  Okay.  I got a CT scan the other day for a different reason other than ruling out an AN.  The ER did not inform me of an AN and so I'm pretty sure that would be a good deciding factor.   But their report shows that I need a follow-up MRI for a "white spot" that is probably due to an old injury.  Now a couple of weeks ago I went to an ENT because I was going to ask for a hearing aid.  I'm 28 and I lost my hearing in my right ear 10 years ago.  I also have REALLY LOUD hissing in that ear and I hear my heart beating 24/7.  I'm also having issues of suddenly feeling really dizzy and I have to side step and hold on to the wall.  The hearing test showed that I have nerve damage hearing loss in that right ear.  So the ENT ordered an MRI.  My MRI is this upcoming Monday so I haven't had it yet.

So if a CT shows AN, then I would assume the hospital would have told me I had one, since they informed me of a 17mm cyst in the maxillary sinus.

Yes. Mine actually was first spotted by a CT, but then I had an MRI to get a better image. Maybe it would be harder to see smaller ANs on a CT?

Well I amit I knew little about these procedures at the time of my ordeal.  I had cat scan in 96 for migraine headache's, it didn't show a tumor. So I went on my marry way just thinking I get headache's!.    Later in 03 along with migraine's one morning I woke up after a severe migraine attack I had  balance issues, hardly no taste issues, numb teeth on my left side,  pain and fullness on my left side of my head, and numbness on my left side of my head. EMT ordered a MRI. That's when the little devil was revealed 3.8cm's. By the time I had my surgery it had grown to around 4.5.  SO for me cat scan didn't work and delayed my ordeal, which could of been small enough to radiation in 96 maybe? They Told me depends on where the tumor at.   I think there are two types of cat scans? one with contrast (which I think they inject you) and one without. IMO if you get cat scan you want the one with contrast??? But, I would push for MRI which IMO is the best and will remove any dought do to the sectional slicing pictures of the area in question
